Rise Lane, Todmoden
In addition to all the other fab walks on. How about joining me for a nice long walk in and around my home valley above Walsden - up to 20 miles. More details to follow as I have yet to finalise my exact route. I am aiming to make it challenging to prep us for the 3 peak challenge (as I am now dreading that) so will involve some nice big hills but then the rewards are the splendid views from the tops. Will plan my route around pub/loo stops, with the usual pub at the end. For best travel for all, I will start/end the walk at Todmorden Rail Station.
As promised , Planned route:
To warm up I propose to start nice and easy by following the cycle route from Tod Rail Station to an area known as Gauxholme, climb up the hillside above the Rochdale Canal towards Walsden before skirting back round again to Gauxholme (by way of and up down the valley above Bacup Road) ..... lovely views along the way.
From Gauxholme we will head up the hillside on the other side of the valley towards Lumbutts. Taking a detour to climb up the hillside, crossing over open moorland, so that we have lunch (if it is not windy) at what has been recently described as the Todmorden Riviera "Gaddings Dam". We can then follow the most direct path back down onto Lumbutts Road to enable us to pop into the Shepherds Rest Inn/use their facilities if we need to.
Stoodley Pike is the next stop (a good climb up) and from here downhill back onto the Rochdale Canal. Only so that we cross the valley floor for the final leg. If we are not too tired (as otherwise I can just as easily lead us along the flat back to the Station by way of the canal) I would like us to take a steep climb up, but on a proper paved path, up and over the next valley side which leads towards Burnley. There are a number of really lovely routes to chose from to take us down the otherside, all bringing us down onto Burnley Road at Lydgate, Todmorden. All that is left to finish is a pleasant stroll through Centre Vale Park (we pass the Sports Centre with Cafe and loos) and a direct route back to Todmorden Rail Station.
Wetherspoons or the The Queens Hotel are both next to the Station for a much needed drink .... if you don't have to dash away.
