First July walk -Marsden - harder walk

  • Jul 6, 2013 · 12:15 PM
  • Marsden Train Station

[masked] Update at bottom.

Eight miles (13km) and 1 263 ft (385m) of ascent so more challenging than our usual walks. We will need to go at a reasonable pace (ie not slow) so please only sign up if you are sure you will be able to keep up.

Not a great one for dogs as the majority of the walk is on National Trust Marsden Moor Estate land and dogs need to be on lead between March and July.

The ground was as dry as I've ever known it yesterday [masked]) but will get boggy in places if we get much rain.

Update from recce on the 22nd (thanks Sue and Sarah). Very blowy up on the tops which gave an added challenge. One steep climb (Yes even I was puffing in spite of my organiser super fitness)  that's fairly short and a couple of steady but long ascents. Please please do not sign up to this walk unless you're confident you can cope with the distance and the hills.

On the bright side, Sue's app said we burned 900 calories. Woo hoo. That's a fair amount of chocolate right there.

Still not that muddy either.

Well the weather was beautiful, the views were breath taking, lovely company and some interesting conversations about tash waxing and other in depth meaningful discombobulating topics.

christine do you have a GPX route file i could export for this walk?

    July 4, 2013

    • Christine

How about if I draw you a sketch on the back of a napkin? I am rather old school when it comes to navigation and don't even know what a GPX file is. You can enlighten me tomorrow.

will backmark/recce if required should have signed up before i went to work !!

    June 7, 2013

  • Christine

I'm optimistic that I'll be able to increase the numbers anyway. Just needs someone to be willing to walk the route first either with me if my shifts allow or on their own. It's a simple route to follow.

    June 7, 2013

    • Sue F.

I think Steve offered to back mark...did you get his message? I'm free certain evenings n weekends to walk the route if Steve can't :-)

      June 7, 2013

    • Christine

Thanks Gareth, I'll bear that in mind in future. I think I should be able to sort something out with Sue and Steve and I think I have a second reserve too now.

Liz Fox on holiday so unable to reply so she's my plus 1. Hope this is ok.

    June 7, 2013

    • Christine

It wouldn't have worked because plus ones get you stuck on the waiting list. The meetup ?algorithm?( bit of code thingy that promotes you onto the main list for people who think algorithm is a long word) will only move you up with a plus 1 if 2 spaces become available at once. I am pretty sure 1 person will drop out before then so have stuck you on.

Hopefully should be there if not abroard

I too am interested. How long before a walk do you open RSVPs?

    May 30, 2013

    • Christine

Generally, 28 days. It tells you on the front page when RSVPs open - in this case Jun 6,[masked]:15 PM. I'm thinking (hoping) we'll get less takers for this one because of the extra mileage.

Can I bring my dog, Molly?

    May 9, 2013

    • Christine

I've not reccied it yet but it probably goes across National Trust land for some of it and that is dogs on leads only.
