Brisbane Web Design September 2013

5.30 Doors Open, Networking

6.00 Welcome, Talks:

An introduction to gamification

by Zac Fitz-Walter / @zefcan

Games are an engaging and captivating medium, and serious games - those built for a purpose other than entertainment - can be used to educate, inspire and train a target user base. More recently though designers have started to borrow elements directly from video games, embedding these elements into non-game interactive systems in an attempt to make a more motivating experience for users. Described as Gamification or gameful design, work in this area has indicated positive results encouraging people to engage with websites.

This presentation will introduce you to the concept of Gamification, where and why you'd use it, and how to design it effectively.

Mr. Zac Fitz-Walter, PhD Candidate, Queensland University of Technology

Zac is a PhD candidate at the Mobile Innovation Lab at the Faculty of Science and Technology, Queensland University of Technology (QUT) with a research focus on Gamification, mobile applications and motivation. His PhD thesis is centered around exploring how to design effective Gamification for mobile services and applications. He has taught a range of subjects at both the Faculty of Information Technology and Faculty of Creative Industries at QUT. He also runs the Gamification Weekly newsletter and develops iPhone applications, Wordpress websites, and games during his spare time. When he gets the chance enjoys playing board games (the really nerdy German ones) and watching Sherlock.

Great info. I thought it may be an interesting presentation but not practical to my web development work, but how wrong I was. Really got me thinking about gamification not only for business but also other area of life, especially making kids chores fun. Great takeaways and examples. Thank you Zac

Thanks so much for the presentation Zac. It was compelling, professional and very informative. Thanks for taking the time time to prepare and share it with us.

Also, I had a couple more examples that you might be interested (one I mentioned as you left lat night). - For getting your kids to do their chores. - Your pet vs the world.

    Both are well designed.

Hi everyone! I'm looking forward to presenting this week, and it looks like we'll have a great turn out! Gamification can be used in many different ways but I'll be tailoring the presentation to focus specifically on its use in websites. If you're keen to do a little prep work then have a quick look through this slideshare presentation on the definition of gamification to get yourself in the headspace:

For those of you who are super keen I've got a few pre-presentation challenges for you:
    1) When was the first documented use of the word gamification?
    2) What percentage of Australian gamers are female?
    3) How do you pronounce "Czikszentmihalyi"?

    See you all Thursday!

    2 · September 17, 2013

    • Chris C.

I'll take 3 - Csikszentmihalyi is "Cheek sent me high"! - my wife is Hungarian ;)

As a mobile app developer I'm interested in exploring the synergies between web development and "web+" app enhancements to the web experience.
