Boxing Day walk - Castle Combe using the Macmillan Way in parts- 4 miles

Meet in the car park.

Due to the weather, Tim Button has kindly found a walk which does not go by the woods or river and is about 4 miles.

The new walk is a loop from Castle Combe using the Macmillan Way in part, thus keeping out of the By Brook valley by staying to the East of the brook. We will turn North at the junction of path lane and Mill, follow the lane for 300 yard's then follow the footpath around West Yatton Down, skirting around the race circuit, until reaching the B4039. There are various options to return to the car park from there. This is no more than 4 miles, perhaps a little on the short side, but I am re posting the full walk in Feb 2014 and hope all of you will sign up again.

It may not be the most scenic route but should provide some exercise and fresh air with out drowning anybody!

We ended up doing the original walk through the hilly and wooded By Brook Valley from Wiltshire's famous picture-book village. Field and woodland paths and tracks, metalled lanes, 10 stiles. , but some of of missed out the river crossing.

We walked just over 6 miles.

We ended up doing a reverse figure of 8, 6+ miles- missing wet Ford and finished in the White Hart.Very nice day, thanks to Claudine for a welcome boxing day 'diversion'.

Can't go now; not sure about the rain last night; might have floods on the way there. The water at Lechdale yesterday was already almost on the ground level, some of the walk paths can't be seen anymore, so it might be tricky too at Castle Combe today after last night's rain. Will amend RSVP, sorry.

    Morning walkers

I RSVP'ed on the Bristol Hiking Meetup event, not here, but I've just checked the Met Office and Environment Agency web sites and there's nothing relevant for today.

I'm still game if everyone else is !

Hi Claudine, as I've just received five e-mails on the same same subject would it be possible to post your messages directly to the Conversation box on this page. Thanks.

I have just looked at the Environment Agency's flood map and would caution against approaching Castle Combe from the South via Ford on the A420. Most of 'By Brook' that flows south through Castle Combe itself and down past Ford is a Severe River Flood area.

There are other routes via Upper Castle Combe [B4039] to reach the designated carpark.

I'm wondering the same - the only walk I've done in this area would be almost impossible with the amount of rain we've had. Although I do fancy a walk on Boxing day!

    Claudine,
Is this route going to be passable considering the amount of rain we have enjoyed over the past 24 hours? The water meadow and stream may well be impassable, do you have a alternative route?

For all walks listed by myself, please make sure that you're fit enough to undertake the walk you intend to join. If you're unsure of your fitness level, try a short and easy walk first. It's much better to find a walk a little too slow or easy than to exhaust yourself.

Some walks are off-road in rural areas. Please have suitable footwear and clothing for the walk you intend to join and bring some food and drink - even if the walk includes a pub or café break.

Walk leaders may refuse to accept participants who in their opinion are inadequately equipped or unfit. When in doubt, contact the organiser or leader in advance. For the safety of yourself and others please follow any advice and guidelines issued by the organiser and the instructions of the leader. Although walking is a very low risk activity, no activity is completely without risk and it is your responsibility to behave sensibly and to minimise the potential for accidents.

    Thanks
