Supported and organized by AdLib (Actors and Directors Living in Brooklyn,) this reading group was formed to provide opportunities for actors and directors living in Brooklyn or willing to work in Brooklyn. In addition, we welcome those with no experience to join us in our play readings to read or to listen.
Members meet to read plays once a month. We select the next play reading from a list submitted by members. Roles are assigned at each reading. No acting experience necessary. Members may choose to listen and not read. Discussion, community and "pot-luck" refreshments are a part of each reading.
From time to time, we present stage readings and full productions. This group produced its first work, Sam Shepard's Curse of the Starving Class, at the Barrow Group Studio Theater on May 15, 2011. We then produced an Equity showcase production of this same work in September of 2011 for 12 performances at the Bridge Theater in Manhattan with 5 Equity and 4 non-Equity actors.
The group also encourages playwrights to submit new scripts for reading by members. An invited audience is welcome to provide feedback for playwrights.
We are also associated with the New York Shakespeare Reading Group and list our Shakespearean readings on that site as well as this site. We read something from Shakespeare at least once every two or three months.
There are not fees or charges for this group. Readings take place in a safe, supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere.
