Oct 16 4:00 PM	Richard Dawkins at UVA 42 attended (est.) – 3.507 September 4, 2009 — Best-selling author and evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins will give a public seminar on Oct. 16 at the University of Virginia based on his new book, "The Greatest Show on Earth: The Evidence for Evolution." The free event will be held at 4 p.m. in Gilmer Hall, room 130. A book signing will follow in the lobby outside the auditorium. Formerly the Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science at Oxford University, Dawkins is the author of the international bestselling books "The God Delusion" and "The Selfish Gene," and nine others. "Richard Dawkins holds a unique position in the worlds of letters and of life sciences," said Robert Kretsinger, Commonwealth Professor of Biology and host of the event. "He addresses general concerns related to evolution with the wit and clarity to engage the general reader. His insights into these processes and mechanisms provoke new questions and paradigms for the researcher." Aug 29 9:45 AM	Joint Charlottesville tour with friends from DC, Maryland and Richmond! 1 attended (est.) – No rating yet **This Meetup is being arranged by the Richmond Reason and Naturalism Association! Please RSVP with them: http://brights.meetup.com/150/calendar/11012245/ Beltway Atheists, Maryland Atheist Outreach and the Richmond Reason and Naturalism Association are going to be in our hometown, and they have invited us to their tour! I saw this Meetup and thought it would be a great chance to meet secular friends from outside the area, while getting an educational tour of C-ville. Please get all of the complete details from the Richmond group. A Day in Charlottesville We will begin the day at Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello. Here, we will get a private group tour of his house and gardens. Out tour is scheduled to start at 11 AM; however, we are requested to arrive and be gathered no later than 9:55 AM in order to get our tickets and be bused from the reservations desk to the main house. Please plan to arrive a little earlier (9:30-9:45) in order to meet up with the group. Next, at 1:00 PM we will have another private group tour of UVa, focusing on the life and times of Thomas Jefferson and the development of the University. After the tours, take the time to enjoy downtown Charlottesville (which has lots of great shopping and dining) on your own or with the group. The recently redone Downtown Mall features outdoor pedestrian shopping and dining, plus wi-fi. Aug 1 6:30 PM	First Annual Skeptic Society Cookout! 30 attended (est.) – 4.505 Come one, come all to the first annual Skeptic's Society Cookout! This is at Amanda's house. I have a BIG shady deck and about 10 or so lawn chairs. I also have a great big grassy yard, so please bring your kids! (Please note, the only toy I have, however, is one nerf football ) Food: We will have hotdogs, buns, condiments, soda (cups and ice) and chips for everyone. Feel free to bring any of the following (but don't feel you have to): Adult beverages for yourself Side dishes or cookies Fancy meat that you would like to grill (we have two weber grills we can fire up!) and/or vegetarian meat if you swing that way. May 23 1:00 PM	The C-ville Skeptics Group May Meetup 10 attended (est.) – 5.001 Hi Everyone! We've had some really great meetings since the Skeptic Society's re-birth in November. Between Meetup and Facebook, we have more than 100 members! Now is the chance for you to give me feedback about the group. This Saturday, rather than a philosophical discussion on a particular topic, I'd like to regroup, refocus, and schedule/plan our next Meetups through the summer and maybe into the fall. If you can't make it Saturday, please email me any ideas you have, troubles you've had, things you'd like to see, things that would make it easier for you to participate, etc. I will consider all of the input and do my best to accommodate. Additionally, there are lots of places where you can become more involved with the group, even if you can't always attend meetings. If anyone would like to volunteer regarding any of these aspects, email me or let me know on Saturday! Discussion topics for Saturday: Summer cookout: Let's confirm the date! Right now I'm planning on July 18.... I have about four book suggestions for the next book clubs. I would like to rotate science with religion books so as not to focus solely on religion... We will schedule these book club meetings. If you are interested in leading a book club discussion, email me! Assistant organizers. Right now our Meetup scheduling is limited to my own schedule. If you are interested in arranging meetups (for example, maybe during times I haven't traditionally been able to accomodate), let me know! We also need a Bulletin Board Barron to keep the discussion going online, a newsletter editor, a public relations guru .... any and all talents are welcome, so don't be shy. I know Skeptical-types aren't joiners, but you'd be surprised how fun it is. And we're a fairly low-pressure group. We have a potential guest speaker! I will provide some info on her at the meeting and we should decide on some potential places and times. Any VAA folks around during the summer? UVA might be a good place to host it (a little nicer than the library). Happy hours: If anyone has any ideas for new happy hour venues, please email them to me prior to the meeting (please provide specific restaurants, not just "somewhere on 29 N"). Otherwise, we'll plan to rotate between the ones we've already been to: Lord Hardwicke's, The Buddhist Biker Bar, Vivace, etc., and we will schedule these out through the fall. If anyone wants to be the Chief of Happy Hours, let me know! This is probably the aspect I suck at the most, so any one who likes party planning is encouraged to sign up. ha Marketing: Any marketing gurus? We need to continue to promote our blog, Cafe Press shop and meetings. Ways to do this are via the newsletter, flyering, craigslist posting, facebook recruiting, etc. We need some more motivated members to help with our World Domination ...err, I mean Growth. If you have an hour a week or so to post things online and spread the word, consider volunteering as CEO of Marketing! I know some of you are probably very computer and social-media savvy .... Lastly and most importantly, broad goals and future discussion topics. Right now we have the book club, discussion groups, and happy hours. Let's schedule these regular meetings out for the next several months so I can add them to the meetup calendar. Ideas for other events? Are we happy with these three types of events? We could also try and meetup with some other groups in the region, if only for networking and socializing! Personally I would like to get some more science-appreciation type events going, so we don't focus TOO much on religion. Any ideas for group trips?
