I'm going to really try and also try to get 'steampunky' dressed. Worry about the shoes, especially summer shoes. If it's rainly I can maybe wear boots. I hope someone in the group makes spats to buy as they seem to make any shoe look steampunk.

looking for snooker and pool tables eh? Mike's Family Billiards has them, it's an all ages pool hall located at[masked] Ave NE. [masked] is the number to call. It's large, and groups can book it. They charge the table rental by the hour. They also serve food and drink. It is in a strip mall so wheeling a chair in shouldn't be a problem. Other meetup groups have used the venue and have pics posted if you want to take a gander. The only down side is, well; there is no steampunk decor to speak of, but that just means we have to dress up even more!

Looks like the leather pocket has two snooker tables. I learned how to play snooker at olympic Billiards, and the leather pocket is 7 dollars for the night, 4 pm to close or 4-8 on weekend nights. that's a good price for snooker and from what i've read the tables are quality and everything's well maintained, and when you're making an 11 foot shot in american rules snooker, that matters.

    May 25, 2012

  • Mike J.

Something to consider... with the amount of people attending this event more than 1 or 2 tables (whether it be pool or snooker) would be preferable. In addition it would be nice to be able to rent the tables by the hour rather than paying by the game.

    May 24, 2012

  • Mike J.

We were looking for snooker tables which are not generally available. Most pubs have just a plug in the coins pool model which while fun is not exactly what I was looking for. There are a number of possible locations which I will post soon. The Leather Pocket was just the one which had the best recomendations. I will also check into prices etc for the various possibilities. If anyone would like to help in researching locations please contact me.

We certainly can arrange a ride so you do not have to bike all the way (unless you want to ). As for atmosphere etc. I have not looked at the site in person yet but if you google it you will get a few photos. In them it looks like it accessible but I will let you know after I get a chnce to check it out.

    May 24, 2012

  • Kevin J.

Does it have a reasonable atmosphere? How about wheelchair accessibility?

Well I just looked up the bike route from my place to leather pocket and it looks doable - 11 km one way. No idea how i'm going to costume as all my time is devoted to working out this dress i'm knitting and it's pretty midcentury modern.

    May 24, 2012

  • Mike J.

Might have a possibility Leather Pocket Billiards, [masked] Street Northwest, Calgary, AB T2K 1A3
snooker and regular pool, open to the Family so everyone can play.

I just finished an interesting conversation with the folks at Heritage Park. It is not possible to rent any of the spaces unless we are also catering an event ($[masked] a pop!). They would not even consider arranging a formal photo shoot for us during normal hours. I thought that might work as a way to avoid the potential 'temporal confusion' with the staff. So no joy for that either.

  • Andrew N.

Would love to play pending a date and location

Oh bother. That's really too bad, because Heritage park is a natural site for this ... but I can see why there's a no costume policy in place. How is the mundane tourist supposed to know which people are actually working there? And a private citizen in period gear certainly isn't obligated to tug their forelock in obeisance to the tyranny of North American Customer Service, so a very bad impression could be mistakenly made.

    May 17, 2012

  • Kevin J.

Heritage park's "No Costume Policy" applies to visitors during the normal hours. It does not apply to private or catered events, according to the nice lady I just talked to there. Maybe we should see if we can setup a formal event for this. Might be a bit pricey though :-(

    May 17, 2012

  • Mike J.

Unfortunatly heritage Park is out as they have a no costume policy in place. (and due to past problems with non CSA Steampunks are not very friendly to Steampunks in general) Otherwise it would have been a great location.
