CG Book Club: The Good Earth by Pearl Buck

For our March selection, we'll be reading the Pulitzer Prize winning The Good Earth by Pearl Buck!

Though more than sixty years have passed since this remarkable novel won the Pulitzer Prize, it has retained its popularity and become one of the great modern classics. "I can only write what I know, and I know nothing but China, having always lived there," wrote Pearl Buck. In The Good Earth she presents a graphic view of a China when the last emperor reigned and the vast political and social upheavals of the twentieth century were but distant rumblings for the ordinary people. This moving, classic story of the honest farmer Wang Lung and his selfless wife O-lan is must reading for those who would fully appreciate the sweeping changes that have occurred in the lives of the Chinese people during this century.

Food: Aileen will organize take-out from Chef Ko Restaurant (http://chefkocuisine.com/dinner_menu). The prices are all reasonable and she should hopefully have a 15% discount coupon. Please e-mail her at [masked] by noon on Friday with your dish of choice. Please also indicated whether you prefer noodles or rice. She will have some soft drinks, water and two bottles of wine available, but feel free to bring your choice of beverage and/or a dessert too.

*Note: Please bring cash or check for your portion of dinner.

Please note: CG Book Club is not currently accepting new members. If you are interested in joining a full-time book club with at least a 6-month commitment, please contact Christi. Non-members are welcome to RSVP to attend a discussion, but members have priority over non-book club members for this event. Non-members will not be able to vote on upcoming book choices.

Thanks for hosting us Aileen and for organizing take-out for dinner. That was a great idea! I enjoyed reading and discussing the book (and it wasn't one I would have chosen myself).
