Re: [CardBoardPlayersClub] Update on Mitch

For whatever it's worth, every patient that is not able to walk around in a hospital gets the venodyne boots (the blue cuffs you saw around his calves).  I take those boots off every patient I see before PT.  Seeing those boots does not mean he has a clot, they are preventative, and quite effective.  So that's one less thing to worry about, hopefully.
Still, it sounds pretty intense for him right now.  My PT student colleague at Hartford Hospital could be seeing him as soon as he is conscious.  If I can get any information I will pass it along.  What is Mitch's full legal name?

postive thoughts are good too!! i heard a dr ask the nurse about an order for his leg, not sure what that was about - he had a cuff on his left ankle and the nurse told me that was there to prevent a blood clot - his ankles were swollen - very serious and very sad - how many surgeries have they done

This continues to be mysterious medically. I am hard pressed to understand so many surgeries unless he is continuing to bleed internally. I am an atheist but prayer can't hurt. Ken

Carrie,
Thanks for keeping us informed.  We'll all have to bring Kareoke into the hospital to sing him well :-)

Hello everyone,
I went to see Mitch today w/ Russ, and he's not in good shape. He's still in ICU and has been put into an induced coma to help keep him from moving around. Your prayers and positive thoughts are definitely still needed. He can have vistors other than immediate family as long as it's not too disturbing to him or the other patients in the ICU. You can also send him a message via the hospital's free CareGram service: http://www.harthosp.com/PatientVisitors/caregram/default.aspx. There were several print outs hanging in the room so the staff is definitely passing them along to him.

I spoke w/ the intern, and she gave me the following info:
- When he was first brought in, Mitch had a torn artery in his abdomen that they surgically repaired.
- He was beginning to recover, but they found he was still bleeding internally from his spleen, which they have now surgically removed.
- All the surgeries went well except that he's now fighting an infection.
- In order to keep him from moving around and disrupting the surgery along w/ making sure he's resting and able to fight the infection, he's been put into an induced coma. As his fever goes down, they'll begin to slowly bring him back.
- Because of the induced coma, he'll need extra recovery time and perhaps some physical therapy because of mucsle weakness.
- Saving the good news for last...Even though he's pretty bruised up, Mitch doesn't have any head injuries or broken bones.

The main focus is getting rid of the infection now. We're all thinking of him and sending our best wishes...

Regards,
Carrie
