For those who wish to see fireworks but don't want to leave Chapel Hill, I'm posting the following information to be sure you all know about the fireworks at Kenan Stadium on UNC Campus. Plus live music. --Michael P., Meetup organizer
Chapel Hill’s Fourth of July Fireworks Celebration at Kenan Stadium
For the donation of $1.00, you will enjoy live music, a watermelon eating contest, face painting for the kids, and--SPECTACULAR FIREWORKS! At the Town of Chapel Hill’s Fourth of July event at Kenan Stadium, donations are suggested at $1 per person and $5 per family. Please note that Town staff who will be accepting donations may not make change.
Family fun activities are planned throughout the entire evening! Gates open at 7 p.m. with a juggling Uncle Sam, face painting, and inflatable sports challenges. A terrific Watermelon Eating contest, hosted by DSI comedy, will begin at 7 p.m. Grand prize winners will receive tickets to one of UNC’s upcoming footballs games this fall. Kenny Mann and the Liquid Pleasure Band is scheduled to perform at 8 p.m. Fireworks will start at 9:30 p.m., with the first 10,000 people through the gates receiving a free glow necklace provided by Grace Church.
The fireworks celebration returned to the community in 2012 after being canceled the year before, thanks to donations from the community and businesses to help offset the costs, which total about $40,000. This year, business owners have stepped up to contribute to the fireworks. The Town of Chapel Hill thanks presenting sponsors: Performance Subaru and UNC Health Care, along with the official sponosrs, Cruizers Convenience & Marketplace, Grace Church, WCHL and chapelboro.com, Chapel Hill Weekly, and East 54. Event Sponsors include The Peoples Channel, Harrington Bank and Chick fil A of University Mall.
Recommended parking for event patrons is in the Craig, Jackson and Cardinal parking decks off Manning Drive. Rams Head Deck and the Bell Tower lots are open to public and disability parking. Parking also is available throughout downtown Chapel Hill.
