The Carriage House Studio is a photography studio and gallery in Washington, DC, offering studio rental, and photography workshops and exhibits. The studio consists of 1,200 square feet of floor space (60' by 20') at street level, with extensive private alleyways for outdoor work.
The studio is located in an historic landmark 1860's carriage house in the Logan Circle Arts District, a few blocks from the Convention Center, White House and Union Station.
Although primarily used as a photography studio and gallery, as an arts cooperative, we welcome other uses of the space for special events, from music to dance to theater and graphic arts. The Studio aims to enrich the lives and art of all who are involved.
The ground floor offers a full photographic studio with professional lighting, including:
- 5x 500W Hensel monolights w. Pocket Wizards
- softboxes, strip box, snoot, beauty dish and umbrellas
- Manfrotto seamless paper background (stock white and grey paper)
- plasma 60" tv screen for tethered shooting
- a variety of props and accessories
FACILITY RENTAL/PHOTOGRAPHY: The studio is available for rental daily (24/7). As of February 15th: Rates are $15/hr Mon to Fri 9 am to 6 pm, $20/hr Mon. to Fri after 6 pm and $25/hr Fri. to Sun. The rental fee for the use of the studio lighting equipment and Pocket Wizards is $30. To reserve the studio, we require payment of a $25/ reservation fee which is non-refundable in the event of cancellation. A one-time Registration Fee of $25, Security Deposit of $100, and signed Rental Contract are required when using the studio for the first time. STUDIO ASSOCIATE PROGRAM: The Carriage House has 12 Studio Associates, who are photographers who use the studio on a monthly basis and receive a discounted rate on the use of the studio, as well as participate in a cooperative approach to developing, promoting and supporting the other members of the Associate Program. WORKSHOPS: A monthly series of photography workshops conducted by our photographers provide instruction on studio lighting, fashion and figurative photography, as well as digital workflow. We also have started a registry of models and makeup artists that are users of the studio, to facilitate putting creative talent together for member's projects.
GALLERY: We hold monthly photography exhibits in the gallery area, featuring both photographers who are part of the Carriage House Studio, as well as other talented photographers. Recent exhibits have included fashion, figurative and urban/street photography and we have a on-going program of future exhibits.
PRINTER & PHOTOSHOP FACILITEIS: The Studio also features a second level with a complete digital MAC worstation, with Photoshop CS4, iMovie, Garage Band and a 20" Cinemascope monitor, and 44" inch Epson 9900 and 24" Epson 3800 printers. We offer workshops on printing, as well as one on one sessions with photographers who want to print their color or black and white work on Hannemuelle, Ilford, Epson papers, as well as canvas and other materials.
The second floor social area can comfortably seat up to 12 for small class, or discussion group gatherings, and features a 60" flat screen TV with an Internet connection, as well as an excellent stereo system with floor standing speakers. Larger groups of up to 50 can be accommodated in the studio area on the lower level.
For dance and music, we have large, uninterrupted rooms of 1,200 square feet of lacquered hardwood as well as a Fender amplifier with 6 channel mixer and CD player. We are also in the process of purchasing large-scale wall mirrors for our dancers.
For social events, the Carriage House Studio also has a complete kitchen, full bath and bedroom area, with linens and weekly cleaning service.
The neighborhood around the Carriage House Studio includes a Giant Food open 24/7, Azi's Cafe, and several bars and restaurants, as well as being just a 10 minute walk from the U St. Corridor.
The location is also conveniently just 3 blocks from the Convention Center Metro Stop on the Green Line, or 8 blocks from Metro Center. There is limited private parking directly in front of the studio, as well as in the alley, and a PMI parking lot with 200 spaces 3 blocks away (Cost: $10).
