I have been notified of this "National Second Amendment March" by a number of people and have seen it on the internet in various places. Some of you may have seen or heard about it too. I strive to ensure that any event posted on this Meetup site is accurate and I do my best to vet each of them. Since this event seems to be gaining a bit of "steam", I thought I should notify you of it and point out some issues with it so you can make an informed decision.
Having said that, I did some checking into this event and as far as I can tell, this was started by someone on FaceBook. There is no sponsor. The person is striving to have a National Second Amendment March at ALL STATE CAPITALS with a million people participating. In my internet checking, I see that on a number of posts on various other social media sites, that there are a number of people from Ohio planning to go and driving in from all parts of the state. People are also talking about openly carrying and bring their long guns. As far as I can tell, there is no organizer.
I am sure that this idea started out as nothing more than to show Washington that "We The People" do not want more gun control; however, in my opinion, this has not been well-thought-out. Here's what I mean:
- I believe you need a permit to do this.
- Without a permit, can you only rally on the sidewalk?
- What is the route or meeting place?
- Who is the spokesperson for the event?
- Is everyone clear on concealed carry laws around the Statehouse?
- Do the police know?
Again, in my opinion, with no organization/organizer, this could cause more harm. The media will find the most outrageous sign or person to speak to and hold them up as the "norm" for regular law-abiding citizens who are responsible gun owners.
Just something to think about on this one. Thanks.
