Unwrap Thoughtful Critiques

Please upload your submissions (6000 word limit, but you may go a bit over to avoid an awkward break), double-spaced, in Word 97-03 (.doc), or RTF) to "Files" under the "More" tab by Noon on Sat. 12/7. Note whether it is a complete work or a piece in progress. Critiques will be optional on any work posted later. Bring your crits to the meetup so that you can present their main points, and please upload them to "Files" ASAP afterward. (If you submit work it WILL be critiqued; there is an expectation of quid pro quo even if you do not attend the meetup.) Note: Some work submitted may be intended for mature readers, so if you are under 18 years of age we request that you obtain permission from a parent/guardian to participate. At Flapjack's enter through the front door, make a right, and go to the tables at the far end. We'll be in the restaurant, not the pub. See you there! :)

Wow! What a superfantabulous meetup! I was heartened by your passion for the written word. I feel that we are gathering the momentum that will enable us to really be effective in our efforts as writers.

If we're going to have so many participants, perhaps we want to consider restructuring how critiques are done. Like we could do it categorically, and every one contributes their stuff under that category. Like "character development", "plot", "grammatical/spelling notes", etc.

Alternately, we might put a time limit on how long each member may spend presenting a critique. I have participated in groups that used this method effectively, and we have done so in the past.

Hopefully the snow doesn't cause too much of a disruption to this meetup.

The snow is to end Sat. evening. The forecast for Sunday: Partly sunny with a high of 36. Doesn't look like there'll be any problems. I'm really thankful the storm didn't happen a day later. :)

Hello. I need to give a friend an estimated time that I would be at their house in Harrisburg afterwards. How long do we usually meet? Thanks!

    December 14, 2013

    • Ashley H.

We usually meet for 2.5-3 hours, sometimes more, depending on how many critiques there are and how long we talk. However, you're not obligated to stay if you need to leave. No one gets offended if someone has leave early for some reason. And if you do, we can always go through your submission early in the meeting.

Once the holidays are out of the way, I would like to begin joining the meetups. How often do you meet? Can you give me some idea about your group, I am green at this so will this be ok, etc.

Mary, We meet monthly to critique (with some discussion as time permits) and hold bimonthly "Gabfests" for discussion only, no crits. In "Files" under the "More" tab you will find helpful tips on how to critique. If you go to the page for our Dec. meetup, you will find specific information on uploading/downloading, etc.
