Capers Island Kayak Adventure!

Capers Island is a spectacular Lowcountry kayak destination! The Charleston Sea Kayaking Meetup Group hasn't been there in years -- but will be heading out this Saturday! Will YOU join us?

Here's the plan:

11:00 am - Meet at Sea Kayak Carolina, consolidate vehicles, and head off to Garris Landing.*

12:30 pm - Approximate time of launch at Garris Landing -- perhaps a little sooner if on schedule.

2:30 pm- Approximate time of low tide. (-1.1', one of the lowest tides of the year. What treasures will we find on Capers Island?)

3:30 pm - Approximate time of arrival back at Garris Landing.

*Garris Landing was formerly, and sometimes still, known as Moores Landing. You can meet the Pod at Garris Landing as an alternative.

National Weather Service forecast for the area here.

Coastal Waters forecast here.

This trip is in relatively protected waters, only waves are from passing boats in the Intracoastal Waterway. It is about 4.25 nautical miles one way -- typically with a group of kayakers (in boats of about 14' in length or greater) it is a steady 1 1/2 hours of paddling one way.

This is a meetup trip. All kayakers are paddling at thier own risk. Lifejackets must be worn, properly fitted and zipped up. Proper dress required -- no cotton! Free to paddle with your own sea kayak (equipped with skirt) and equipment. Sea kayaks may be rented in advance at Sea Kayak Carolina for only $30. Please call[masked] in advance if you wish to reserve a rental kayak.

Do you think spray skirts will be necessary for this paddle? Also appropriate for 12' kayaks?

Anita - Good morning! The trip out to Capers is a bit over 4 nautical miles. In my experience, folks in kayaks of about 15 feet or longer paddle the trip in about an hour and a half of steady paddling. Although it can be done in shorter kayaks, it has been my experience that most folks have a challenge keeping up with a group of folks in longer kayaks. Please give me a call if you have any questions or concerns, or let us know if you would like to bring a longer kayak along for you. I hope to see you Saturday -- it's shaping up to be a fine time! -Scott
