Kayak to Bull Island

We will head out from Garris Landing and head to Bull Island. Depending on the weather forecast we will head for the North OR the South end of Bull Island. We will walk the beaches during the day and return with the flood tide[masked]:12 EDT Sunrise[masked]:27 EDT Moonrise[masked]:37 EDT 4.59 feet High Tide[masked]:31 EDT 0.06 feet Low Tide[masked]:31 EDT Sunset
In order to catch the tides this will make a long day. Bring a Gallon of water per person and a suitable lunch. This is an intermediate level trip. Contact Starr Hazard[masked] [masked]

I've been at the landing a while and don't see anyone. I guess this been canceled?

So I am basically admitting that I do not use Meetup for day of the event communications

Hope that you got the email that I sent this morning at 5 a.m. I sent it in case you didn't see the meet-up message. I would have notified you yesterday, but had hoped that the thunder/lightning all night in Murrells inlet would have abated.

Right now (5 a.m) there is thunder and lightning here in Murrells Inlet. I don't mind rain at all, but I'm not liking the lightning. Therefore, although it may clear up by the time I got down there, I will need to be cancelling. Sorry and I hope that it clears up for you all.

Here is a useful checklist for paddlers
    http://lowcountrypaddlers.net/Safety.htm
Here is a "local" version of trip ratings
The Tour-De-Harbor trip was a Level 3 trip. This one is more of a Level 1.5-2 trip.
Short kayaks are great for some bodies of water but for more open water and longer distances the short yaks tend to be rather slow and this complicates a group paddle where there are longer boats. Typically on these barrier island trips the paddle from landing to destination is roughly an hour and half. The paddle out and back to Bull's is about that regardless of destination on the island. To the South end is about 4 miles so a round trip would be 8. The North End is about 5miles each way but is more open.

I'd contact Starr Hazard, the leader of the outing, with your question: Contact Starr Hazard[masked] [masked]

Is this seriously a 10 hour event?

The idea is to not paddle against the tide flow. Low tide is not until 3:30. After that we can ride WITH the tide back to the landing. So YES this event could last nearly 10 hours by the time you get back to Charleston.

I put my name down to go but I need a longer sea kayak. Mine is a ten foot otter. Does anyone have one they can loan me or I may be able to rent one. I will let you know.

Starr often uses generic beginning and end times. I'd contact him directly for more specific details. It does involve kayaking out and back to a barrier island and a hike on the island, so it probably is not short.
