October Geek Book Club - Redshirts by John Scalzi

Stop by Park Road Books at 7pm on October 8th to discuss Redshirts by John Scalzi. Winner of the 2013 Hugo Award for Best Novel, Redshirts is about the starship ensigns who were expendable...until they started comparing notes.

Ensign Andrew Dahl has just been assigned to the Universal Union Capital Ship "Intrepid," flagship of the Universal Union since the year 2456. It's a prestige posting, with the chance to serve on "Away Missions" alongside the starship's famous senior officers.

Life couldn't be better...until Andrew begins to realize that:
1) every Away Mission involves a lethal confrontation with alien forces,
2) the ship's senior officers always survive these confrontations, and
3) sadly, at least one low-ranking crew member is invariably killed. Unsurprisingly, the savvier crew members belowdecks avoid Away Missions at all costs.

Then Andrew stumbles on information that transforms his and his colleagues' understanding of what the starship "Intrepid" really is...and offers them a crazy, high-risk chance to save their own lives.

(You can always pick up the book at Park Road Books for 20% off this month, but we welcome any version during the book club, paper or electronic.)

As usual, we will probably go down to Sir Edmund Halley's restaurant (in the same shopping center) for more informal conversation (& food & drinks) after the book club. Everyone is welcome!

Just the idea of spending time on a plane with Leonard Nimoy makes me jealous.

I read this last year, and so decided to listen to the audiobook to brush up. OMFG is Wil Wheaton's reading funny! Try the audiobook if you don't have time to get to the actual text.
