Explore the vibrant culture of the Spanish Caribbean! The Latin American Coalition takes over Midwood International and Cultural Center on Saturday, June 22, 2013, for their fourth annual Caribbean Celebration, ¡Azúcar! This year’s unique, indoor-outdoor festival features the tropical sounds of Puerto Rican salsa, Dominican bachata, and Cuban son. The intoxicating smell of Cuban cuisine will lure you from the dance floor to the outdoor plaza where you can enter the domino competition, peruse the wears from local craft vendors, and, of course, dive into a mouth-watering Cuban sandwich. Doors open at 7pm, the fun starts at 8pm. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 the day of the show.
To get you warmed up, Rodrigo and Wendy Jimenez of R&W Latin Dance Company will lead the crowd with a free salsa lesson at 7:30 pm. Performers from their company will showcase their smooth moves throughout the night, demonstrating bachata, merengue, and salsa dances. Put your new dance moves to the test when Orquesta K’Che, an eleven-piece salsa band from the Triangle area of North Carolina, hits the stage! Think you can dance like a pro? Then you won’t want to miss the merengue competition! Charlotte’s very own DJ Chaos will mix it up between performances. The evening culminates in a special tribute to the legendary Celia Cruz, performed by Leydy Bonilla and Orquesta Mayor.
