The Chicago Latino Atheists Meetup Group Monthly Meetup

Greetings everyone in this 2011 new year. Hope everyone had a wonderful winter solstice and a happy new Year. I hope to meet as many of the group members this year as possible and expand and/or collaborate with other atheist groups in the area that have interesting activities throughout the year. I hope many of you will participate as we face the latest end of world prophecy with the ending of the Mayan calendar and as such will need to organize our underground network of reason and sanity to see us through the return of the dark ages!!!....J/K everyone!!...but do join us for good conversation and fun when ever we can manage it! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meet with other like minded individuals and help fill in the gap left by religion when we no longer subscribe to and believe in religion. Understand that culture and religion are vehicles for information not meant to be strictly followed but once understood in historical and academic contexts meant to be changed. We only have to look at our current society, economy and the states of many of our home countries to understand that the religious institutions have failed us. Understand that secular education and keeping the church separated from the state have been the only real means by which human progress has been achieved. We will attempt to raise awareness throughout our communities working through our collective issues as a global human community and through our unique cultural issues as Latino/a's. This group is open to anyone regardless of race, ethnicity, eye color, height, weight, sexual orientation, political affiliation or religious/non-religious leanings. All are welcome.

A very warm, friendly and engaging group. I was initially concerned about my lack of fluency in Spanish, but while Spanish was occasionally spoken (and I'd dearly love to learn it), everyone was aware that two or three of us lacked the ability and I never felt excluded. Thanks to Jose and Martha for organizing and to Martha for staying behind with us as no one wanted to leave long after we had finished our meal.

I promised a few links to a few newcomers: The website for Juhem Navarro-Rivera (who was here a few months ago) is http://thelatinone.com. The website for the group is http://latinoatheists.com/
