**Canceled for today** Fossil Hunt & Canyon Tour

  • Sep 23, 2012 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

*** UPDATE: This event has been canceled for today. It is rescheduled for Sunday, September 30th. Here is the event listing: http://www.meetup.com/Chicago-Skeptics/events/82797672/

Until you stand at the very edge of the top, you can't tell it's there. Step down into the refreshingly cool creek bed of Sagawau Canyon to look for ferns, lichens, tree roots cracking apart the stratified rock, arachnids, maybe some amphibians and reptiles.

Join us for a full day of learning about and experiencing nature. Staff biologists or naturalists will guide us through a brief classroom session, fossil hunt, and canyon tour. There will be time for independent exploration. Despite its shiny new Environmental Learning Center and lovingly maintained grounds, the Sagawau Canyon Nature Preserve is largely unknown and under-used.

**See the Chicago Skeptics link below for CARPOOLING.**

This field trip is family-friendly. Seniors and those who are mobility-challenged are welcome to relax in the building or by the butterfly garden during more strenuous activities.

-Get your hands dirty hunting for fossils in the excavated rock pile on the side of the old 1930's Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) quarry, now converted to a small lake.

-Spot fossils underfoot as you walk across the rare dolomite prairie around the quarry.

-View the hummingbird and butterfly garden while sitting on the old farmhouse porch.

-Find out what George the Turtle Expert does for the turtles' breakfast.
Ramble down the various nature trail loops.

-Tour Cook County's only canyon, a short 1000 ft distance. (The tour involves briefly getting your feet wet and stepping on wet, slippery rocks. I recommend gym shoes.)

The educational content can include the unique geology of our area, fossils, geologic time (Yes, more than 4 digits!), wildlife, flora, local history, evolution, etc. Other points of interest from its website:

-Provides habitat for over 100 species of migrant and resident birds, and is home for the banding program of the Chicagoland Bird Observatory.
-Offers week long workshops that may be taken for personal enrichment or as an accredited class through Governor’s State University. All programs are designed as in-service courses for teachers but are of value to anyone desiring more knowledge of Chicago area ecology.

The informal educational content will cover what you are interested in and will go as deep as your questions take it. Come prepared to ask questions! Bring your binoculars.

Participants must RSVP on this Chicago Skeptics page:
