    what a difference a translation makes - Politics, II.iii 3 1265 a10:

"Now it is true that all the discourses of Socrates possess brilliance, cleverness, originality and keenness of inquiry, but it is no doubt difficult to be right about everything." Rackham in the Loeb

"Therefore, all the dialogues of Socrates use excessive language, lack profundity, try for novelty, and raise many questions. But it is perhaps hard to say everything well." Regan, from Aquinas' "Commentary on Aristotle's Politics."

I kinda like the 2nd. Makes ya smile, don't it?

Regan's is current - 2007. He did not translate the Latin translation Aquinas used - he relied principally on the Reeve's translation of 1998. Rackman is from the 1930's I think. So if we are looking for 'current' Regan is it. Interesting, I think.

The word I was trying to recall is "autochthous." It's indigenous in Latin. The Athenians thought of themselves as the original inhabitants, not new arrivals.

Hi everyone! I agree with Elizabeth! It's too dangerous to be out! I may come just to hang out but I don't expect anyone to be there. Please stay safe! We will continue next week. :D
