I used to think that reading Ovid was a way to see the world through different eyes - eyes that saw the world as a divine creative force. Now that I am re-visiting Proust I think I spoke to hastily. The world (the one that involves human interactions - the only important world) is still a world of transformations, we've just sublimated the creative force.

The force that animates the forests with divine spirits that metamorphose reality for Ovid, and the force at work in the social interactions at dinner parties that metamorphose the world for Proust, is the same force. Ovid called it divine. We, for some reason, don't.
