Discuss poetry.

For our introductory meetup let us each plan on bringing one page of poetry and talk about some ground rules and guidelines to follow as we go along. I have a fair idea of how to run groups and things of this nature but I always love to hear input from other members on how to improve the process. (And we all know it is all about process.)

I am asking everyone to be willing to read their poems out loud and bring enough copies so others can look at the poem as it is being read out. The reading is meant to serve two purposes: 1) it enables others to see how you view the poem (aurally; ex: where you take pauses) and 2) it improves your own reading -- both in terms of raw reading and getting to be a better performer, as well as hearing how your poem sounds out loud.

We have also in the past have had another member read out your poetry and that leads to valuable insights too.

Having this at a central location in the loop, but definitely open to changing as we figure out where everyone lives. (Because as we will soon learn that place is hopping around 6 PM on a weekday, and we might be better off in quieter environs.)

I got called in for a patient in labor. I don't think I'm going to make it tonight. Can't wait for next time! Good luck, I hope it goes well for everyone.

Definitely was looking forward to this 1st meeting, but I figured work would get in the way which is why I didn't RSVP right away. I look forward to possibly doing something on a weekend, maybe.

Oliya, I am open to meeting in the suburbs provided the meeting point is close to the Metra. We also have to see where other members live and how willing they are. We'll let you know. (I am also willing to carpool people out to some place.) We could likely come with a shedule where we do one in the suburbs once every so often. As I said, this first meeting is to figure out stuff like that.

I would attend a meeting in the suburbs. Glenview and Northbrook would work well for me.

Thanks Belinda for your question. I have updated the address. I was using the address that the system populated automatically (it was wrong!). As Bill has pointed out this is on the SE corner of the intersection of State and Jackson. I plan on getting there a little early to be able to reserve space. It is less than a mile of a walk from Union station (6 blocks or so). Simply walk East on Jackson.

AFIK, this is the DePaul B&N at the southeast corner of Jackson & State. At least that's where I will be. :) There's a cafe on the ground level. The poetry shelves are on the lower level. It's close to the H W Library stop or the Adams/Wabash stops on the El. The Jackson stop on the Red Line. It's a good walk from Union Station but doable if you're used to crossing the loop on foot.

Also - are you sure you have the address right? When I do a search for Barnes and Noble in the Loop, it comes up as 1 E. Jackson, not 1 W - that's the address for Malcom X College west of Greektown. so - is it E. Jackson, east loop - or is it West?

Is this walking distance from Union Station? If so, I think I can make it.
