Watch Japan VS Greece + Language Exchange @ Koyoi Izakaya

FINAL UPDATE (JUNE 18, 2014) -

This week's language exchange will be more informal and held at an izakaya called Koyoi! The address is 5347 Yonge Street. It is a 2 minute walk from North York Centre TTC Station. There is also paid parking nearby.  They have a big screen TV on their second floor, where I have reserved a table for us.  I've been there before with some other friends in this group and they have delicious dishes, as well as a nice selection of drinks.  We'll watch the whole game together doing informal Japanese and English language exchange.  Let's hopefully celebrate a Blue Samurai victory :-)

During the first half of the game, we will all speak in English.  During the second half of the game, we will speak in Japanese.

Mmm hopefully...I prefer more of a casual hang out type of language exchange on the fly type of guy though (if that makes any sense lol)

Well it looks like strike 3 for me failing to join this event. I dont wanna do informal japanese-english (the first time I attend a session, I wanna go for serious engish-mandarin exchange with a female mandarin speaker.) Informal japanese-english doesent interest me this week and since I also find the world cup totally boring (not a soccer fan sorry) I guess I'd be better off @ next week's session. What a shame..the world cup ruined my 3rd attempt to come to a session. :( maybe 4th times the charm? I dont mind doing japanese-english at these sessions but I wanna do mandarin-english the 1st time I come. I'll try again next week and sign up as soon as it opens. I look fwd to coming next week hopefully. This Izakaya thing sounds interesting..I'd like to try it with u guys...maybe next week. Sorry everyone...

Hi Mark, thanks for letting us know. Just out of curiosity, is there any particular reason you strongly prefer a female partner? If we partner you with a Mandarin-speaking male next time, would that be okay for you?

Will the modification only apply to this week's session or is it from now on for all future sessions? Because I'm wondering if I should cancel this one and go for the one on June 26th instead (if I cancel I'd do so wednesday afternoon before the deadline)...also whats Izakaya? Is that a specific type of Japanese cuisine?

Hi Mark, it is only for this week since the Japan vs. Greece World Cup game is at the same time. Izakaya is the Japanese equivalent to a bar or pub, where people typically drink alcohol and have tapas. We always eat together as a group after the language exchange each Thursday night

Thanks for telling me...I live fairly close by to yuzu and I walk by it quite a bit...I always wondered what it was and now I know. Maybe I'll get a chance to go try them sometime. Still unsure if I wanna come this week...I'll cancel before the deadline tomorrow if I decide to not come...it'd be a shame because it'd be the 3rd time my attempt to come has failed. I'm gonna sign up for the next one as soon as the rsvp's open regardless...

So far, I'm adding our Japanese members first for this event and depending on how many Japanese speakers we have, we'll balance it out with English speakers :-)

We can eat some takoyaki too while watching the game :-)

Since the Japan vs Greece World Cup game will also start at 6 PM and last roughly 2 hours, we will make this more of an informal language exchange, speaking in English and Japanese while watching the soccer game together at the Tea Shop. Ganbatte Nihon!

Ok this is the 3rd time I've tried to come to this meting....I tried for june 5th and june 12th and they both failed. I would like to try this @ last once because I've wanted a serious mandarin/japanese exchange ever since I joined meetup.

I'm gonna register when it's available, but please make my spot available to others, if there's new comers, I was lucky enough to attend the last two and I wouldn't mind if somebody else got a spot instead of me, and practice what i have with so far, and I will still attend Yuzu regardless.

Okay Maurice, thanks for letting us know! We'll see you at Yuzu regardless :-)

Ummm...I dont think I'll be able to buy anything from the tea shop because my $ runs out before the 19th of this month. Also I'm not really capable of teaching English. I helped teach english before, but my friend was the one doing the explaining. I cant explain english well on my own. I can try but I know my partner will only benefit if my friend explains it. Is it ok if I still come because I really wanna learn japanese and mandarin seriously? Sorry but teaching english isnt a skill I have. Last week's meeting on june 12th was wayyyy better for me time wise and $ wise.

I find my main issue is that because I'm a native engish speaker born in canada, english comes natural/ byinstinct to me and I dont think about the structure of the language and stuff. But if I see their esl stuff, I might be able to explain it better by building on whats in their esl book. I'll just try once and see how it goes...

And I dont think I'll learn anything...formal language classes have never been able to teach me successfully. I think I'm one of those rare ppl who needs to go to the contry of the language I wanna learn if I want any chance of actually picking anything up. I just wanna try one more time to help someone learn english seriously. And I wanna learn both languages so if I came how would that work? I'll just try this once...and if I'm successful, I'll rsvp for later ones...although I probably wont sign-up for all of them...this kinda meeting is exactly what I've been hoping for. Thanks.
