Re: [The-Classics-Book-Club-of-the-North-Metro] Pam added a post Alice, your messages are at least getting out to everyone who agreed to received the messages sent to the group.  If they didn’t opt to receive messages, they can catch archived messages on the web site, but otherwise, I guess they just won’t “get the message.”  I also have a different idea of “classics” but that’s the trouble with picking classics, anyway.  What is today known as a classic is not what our parents thought they were, and what our children and grandchildren will consider classics has yet to be described.  :-)  Meanwhile, more and more books get written.  I, too, wouldn’t mind reading some Dickens, but some of these books are quite old-fashioned and hard to understand because they are definitely not written in modern English.

Hi Pam and Everyone,
I'm not sure about this method of communication as it isn't clear to me that the messages are getting out but I'm going to give it a try. ?

Now that I've had some time to really peruse the "100 Best" list, I'm realizing that I have a different idea of a "classic" than the Modern Library does. ?There isn't a book on there by Dickens, any of the Brontes, Sir Walter Scott, Austen, or any of the great Russian, German, or French authors. ?Not that there aren't plenty of good books on the list that I haven't read but I'm wondering if people will be amenable to expanding our definition of a classic somewhat.

I picked up the first book selection yesterday and look forward to starting it tonight.

Best,
Alice?

Hello Everyone,
I am please to see the lively discourse has begun! (This is going to be a great group!).

After considering all responses, we will be meeting at our originally scheduled 3rd Thursday of the month. I am up for meeting Aug. 19th if you all are. The first book to be read (chosen at random from the responses received) is....Sons and Lovers by D. H. Lawrence. I know we have a shortened reading schedule so just do the best you can.
I would be happy to host the first meeting at my home in Coon Rapids--it is not large but can accommodate 10 people (which is probably the number that can/will make it) with a couple of extra chairs. We can discuss future books/meetings and other details when we meet. Thank you all for your participation and I can't wait to meet everyone. I will post/email my address when I figure out how to do it securely as I am relatively new to MeetUp.
