Neuse River Clean Up Day

Yes, it is almost that time of year again.  Please join us as we once again do just a little to help the condition of the Neuse River.  Each year I feel more optimistic about the mind set that decides the condition of our local major river.  Though stopping the pollution is not an easy task, each year the river seem to show less material damage than in years past.  I hope this is a trend towards better managing this beautiful and important resouces.  I hope you will join us for this yearly cleanup.  As in years past, there are usually plenty of canoes available, provided for free by Johnston Community College.  They are distributed on a first come basis, and there are usually a few extra.  Please give this local river at least one day of your time, the rewards are priceless.  Best wishes,

Kurt

Thanks for putting your back into the paddling at all the critical times, I couldn't have asked for a better half! And SO glad we were not among the swimmers. Enjoyed meeting and working with you!

after paddling the Neuse Sat, looks like a LOT of the trash is only reachable by boat... will we be meeting where we can launch from?

Hi Mona, we will meet at Smithfield Commons, go upstream and float back down.

hey Kurt I'm excited about the cleanup day but have a couple questions. do we need to bring our own trash bags and since this is my first canoe trip with you do I need to bring my own flotation device? I'm assuming I bring your own water snacks/lunch. what additional supplies may we need?

Hi kurt who is actually sponsoring the cleanup event? I may be able to get Lake Johnson to our effort if we can provide them with a certificate of insurance and transport them ourselves.

      April 5, 2013

    • Kurt B.

Teresa, the event is sponsored by the Nuese River Foundation. I'm sure the certificate is in order, but the logistics might be a little tight. I walked the area today, the grounds need some cleaning, but not enough to keep everyone busy for long. The river snags are full of debris. We have 5 canoes to lend out and I hope enough people to fill them. We would certainly appreciate Lake Johnson being a part of anything we do, but boats are essential for this event and I cannot personally assure them that we have enough boats and the logistical ability to get them here and in the water. We may have some room, but I cannot be sure until tomorrow. Thanks

Hi Kurt and Judy, Don't know if we can come since we might have all 3 grandchildren that day. If that is case, we noticed plenty of garbage at our end of the Neuse and plan to make an outing out of that with the kids so maybe some of it won't reach you! Great cause and thanks to all for your efforts!

Is the clean-up normally an all day or half day activity? Just want to have enough drinks to last... and lunch if need be.

    April 2, 2013

    • Kurt B.

Hi Bernice, normally about half a day, but I will remain as long as people wish to participate

Have a wedding to go to that night, but will be able to stay until 2 or 3. I'll come early and hope to get a canoe.

    Hi Electra,
Last year they had about 8 extra unused canoes at the Smithfield site. Can't guarantee this year but an early arrival will help your chances significantly

I told my job about this and we have a potential of 10 people to come for a work outing, do you think there will be enough boats then?

Count me in. Third or fourth year in a row? Fun times.
