What do you like most about creating games?

I like to design worlds, cultures and characters. Setting up interesting plots and unique game mechanics to breathe life into scenarios is something I have enjoyed working on in tabletop role-playing games, and is something I want to do at the professional level. I am looking between the possibilities of tabletop and console game development, and trying to find a path that leads me to either one. Since it's the stories that envelope me, I believe I could find an enjoyable position in either environment.

How would you describe your level of experience in game development?

I have worked on several projects that have flopped. I lack the appropriate coding knowledge to create a game myself, and it's been a major setback. I have worked with a friend of mine (an art graduate from Bowling Green) for several years now, and am fully confident in my ability to communicate my ideas. I am currently working on an Android game with that artist and a programmer. So long as we don't lose our programmer, I should have my first successful release near the end of this summer.

Is game creation something you do for fun, or is it more of a professional interest? Please describe.

Game creation is an all-encompassing interest for me. It has always been a passion of mine; when I was younger, I would take multiple board games and try to combine them in new, rejuvenating ways. Now, I am a father of one with another child on the way, and I'm tired of just scraping by. I see game design as a profitable way of exposing my passions to the world, and have thrown everything I can at achieving that goal.

What part of game dev are you most into? Programming, animating, AI, 3D modeling, marketing, etc?

The best position I find myself in projects is team management. I understand the basics of coding, graphics, and development as a whole, and can communicate one team member's concerns to another. I focus on establishing the end goal, and organizing each project member to efficiently reach our goals. I have some programming experience, though all of that is self-taught and sketchy at best. I have a good deal of concept drawing and 3D modeling experience, through constant doodling and working with the 3D editor in SecondLife, but anything I would create would only be a prototype. What I draw would exemplify my ideas, and help communicate them to a real artist, who has dedicated their lives to that profession. I am interested in understanding the market strategies behind game development, but I think that will come with time and experience. Currently, I understand the basics of playing the market, but lack the experience to fully comprehend the finer details.


My name is Kyle Blackston. I'm an aspiring game designer who has focused on writing above all else. I am trying to find a position locally where I can get professional development experience, while working with friends from Bowling Green on projects.
