In this talk, I introduce three main topics: The increasingly popular CAN bus (and how to use it with Arduino), the decreasingly popular hobby of model railroading, and how these two topics intersect.
In the first half of the talk, I introduce CAN (Controller Area Network) bus—what it is, how it works, why it is awesome, what it can do for your projects, and how to harness it with inexpensive microcontrollers like Arduino. In the second half of the talk, I introduce the state of the art in model railroading—the birthplace of hacking—along with some current engineering problems and how the OpenLCB Group and Railstars (my business) are attempting to address these problems using CAN technology. A demonstration of this technology—which basically means a chance to play with some model trains—follows.
Come for the discussion of CAN, stay to play with the model trains.
