I don't have enough experience with individual microprocessors/microcontrollers to have formed an intelligent opinion on this. I have a Beagleboard and an FPGA I play with, and I've played with ATMega's and a few Arduino's.
C, because it is much more scalable than assembly. What other embedded languages are there besides those?
A MIDI translator/filter to connect my drumset to Rockband.
A security camera system that ran on power-over-ethernet, used wake-on-lan to wake up a server, and batched pictures uploads to the server then shut it down. And it would only save pictures where something had changed enough between pictures.
I'm an EE with a penchant for software design. Currently thinking (sadly just that) of making my own programming language.
