Sleeping Giant Hike: Let's get out and work off that Thanksgiving Dinner!

Bob says... "Not for beginners"...  Bob will lead the group through the more rugged trail... a slightly challenging hike that at times might be moderate in pace. The terrain is certainly strenuous in places.  We are going out on the blue trail but because the blue trail does not loop back to the parking lot we will head back on the orange trail (easier) unless time does not permit then we will take the purple trail.

Difficulty - Not for beginners, similar to the longer/higher section hikes.  See photo there is a section that is fairly steep both up and down, we had to help people navigate one of the down portions.

Distance - about 5-6 miles - 3 to 4 hours of hiking with a rest at the tower for pictures and a snack, we will also have a few other lookouts where I am sure photo time will be needed and we will take our time through the rough patch assisting others when needed.

Please bring water, snacks, layers (not cotton) and a fanny pack/day pack/camel back for all of the above.

Does anyone want to carpool from the Farmington commuter lot?

    November 24, 2012

    • Rick

Hi Melissa, I would like to carpool - do you still have room in your car?

      November 24, 2012

    • Melissa

I received multiple responses and I will be hitching a ride but I think the car is now full.

Bob - since no one has made an apres-hike suggestion for you, I'll make one:
Aunt Chilada's (Mexican - or for those of you who know real Mexican - it's "ish"

it is 1.3 miles away from our hike

Gail I hiked it today people were on their hands and knees so I want to make sure everyone knows what they are up against. As far as in shape the climbs are not long but will get your heart rate going.

I was one of the folks climbing the rocks hand over hand. Great workout - but folks need to understand it is a SERIOUSLY challenging workout- cool but really tough. Not long - but rockcllimbing for a while - if you're up for it - wonderful.

Melissa. I am willing to carpool. I would be happy to contribute toward the driving expense. Are you referring to the Park and Ride lot on Route 4 or the one on Batterson Park RD? Erik

Are you meeting at the exchange?

I have a full car so I am going direct. Check with Carol Ann she had sent me an email about carpooling

This Park has a leash law so please remember the leash. Sleeping G is well travelled so we may come upon hikers outside of our group where it would be good to have that leash handy. Plus there are many dog lovers among us and we want your dog safe in the parking areas where there is traffic.

Fences, one more reason to prehike every trail. But hey, it was memorable! Of course, on this hike there's a whole new reason to carry ropes. Looking forward to the views. It's going to be a beautiful but chilly day. Bob picked a great weekend, see you all there.

    November 24, 2012

  • Carol A.

Jessica... Since Bob is leading and not Dave, it's unlikely we will be scaling fences. Good of you to ask! Please do bring extra rope and harnesses tho because there are several hikers new to our group and it would be nice to be able to share.

    November 24, 2012

    • Bob

I haven't heard the tail of scaling fences can't wait to hear what Dave made you do.

      November 24, 2012

  • Bob

Wow, looks like a great group. The temps are going to be a little lower than we have had the good fortune of hiking in thus far so remember to ware layers. I typically ware a thermo-tec (Base) of some type against my skin, then other layers usually including a fleece (Insulation) with a wind stopper (Outer Layer) on the outside. Also with it being cold you might not go to your water as often but actually you should drink more water.
