Flying Circus Annual Balloon Festival & Air Show

This is a 2-day event in Bealeton, Va so if the weather does not cooperate on Saturday, Sunday may be an option. Balloons fly early morning and in the evening so you decide which works best for you. See website for more info: http://www.flyingcircusairshow.com/balloon.html

The weather was perfect as were the conditions for ballooning. We saw a good number of them take-off and a good number of then landing. A couple of us went up in one of the tethered balloons......it was awesome!

The Richmond Photo Meetup Group is also scheduled and this was posted on their site:

".....tomorrow's weather for Warrenton looks OK -- 10% chance of rain light winds. Last year, we cancelled because it was raining in Richmond, but the weather in Bealeton was fine and -- they went on with the festival. BUT -- the organizers are very cautious. For instance if the wind is blowing in a direction that will take the balloons over a hazardous area (like an interstate), they will cancel --whether or not there is rain. SO -- it is a crap shoot. I will continue to watch the weather through about 4 AM tomorrow to decide if we officially cancel. I understands everyone's decision either way. It's a long way to drive to watch nothing happen."

I agree 1000%, it is a crap shoot and I will mirror the comments above. My plan, if the weather is iffy at 4am, is to stay home. You will need to make your own decision.

Is it worth going if I can't get there until 8am?

Chris, I wish I could give you more information to help you make your decision but all I know is what the website says.

I tried to call the Flying Circus today to get more information on the exact schedule for tomorrow but only got the answering machine. The latest weather, and I am posting this because this is a weather dependent event, is: Saturday A chance of showers after 5pm. Increasing clouds, with a high near 75. Calm wind becoming east 5 to 9 mph in the morning. Chance of precipitation is 30%. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Changed time to 6:30 but get there whenever you can! Keeping fingers crossed that the weather will allow liftoff!

I understand that the place is not very big so you should not have a problem spotting a bunch of folks with cameras. There may be other groups there, just ask for the HDR group. Having never been there, I am not sure of a specific place to meet.

I've decided to cancel my attendance in view of some uncertaintity with the lift off and considering that it would take me 1 hr and 45 min each way.

    National Weather Service:

Tonight: Areas of fog after 10pm. Otherwise, partly cloudy, with a low around 56. Southeast wind 3 to 5 mph. Saturday: Mostly cloudy, with a high near 75. Light and variable wind becoming east 5 to 10 mph in the morning. Saturday Night: Showers likely, mainly after 2am. Cloudy, with a low around 63. East wind around 5 mph becoming calm. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible. No telling at this point if the balloons will lift-off or not........I would check the weather report before leaving in the morning. That is my plan.

i have been in previous years. Get out there very early. In the yeas I have been out there, the balloons have not flown in very close due to the wind current. I hope they are right in front of you tomorrow. The drive down 95 is beautiful as well.

Thanks Melony.......getting there early sounds like a good idea! Perhaps 6:30 instead of 7:00?

yes, definatley. There are lots of other photographers at this event and the area used to have some good early morning light shooting down in the field to the right of the balloon area.
