Main Reading Room, Library of Congress

Twice a year the Main Reading room is open to the public and photography is allowed. NO Tripods are allowed but there are plenty of places to set your camera on to get some really good shots. If you've never been there you need to check it out. One of the most beautiful places in DC. This will not be hosted so just come whenever you can during the Open House hours. From the LOC website:

President's Day

February 17, 2014, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.
The Jefferson Building s Great Hall and exhibitions will be open to the public, including a Main Reading Room Open House from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. The Young Readers Center celebrates past and future presidents with hands-on activities like speech reenactments, trivia, crafts and more at 10 a.m. in Room G-29. All other reading rooms and other Library buildings will be closed in observance of the Presidents Day federal holiday.

    Hi Madge

Hi Kevin, I'm glad you got a chance to see the video. Every now and then I put together a slideshow or video from some of my pictures. I'm no professional by any means, but it's a nice way to display photos. Thanks again. Madge

I put together a little video/photo slideshow of my visit last week to the Library of Congress. Since I didn't have a tripod, my video is a little shaky. Nothing professional, but take a look if you so desire. Here's the link: http://vimeo.com/87598906

The description of this event said the Main Reading Room is open to the public just twice a year. Where can one find the dates that it is open to the public and photography allowed?

They haven't announced it yet but it will be on Columbus Day.

This was my first meeting with the group as well as my first time doing HDR and I am looking forward to learning more about both. I have seen some very good images come from the shoot (all someone else's) and I plan on attending more gatherings.

Bill thank you very much for the notification ! It is indeed an amazing building with overwhelmning details.

May I suggest the Supreme Court building as our next venue ?

I guess I showed up later then everybody else because I don't remember seeing any of the group. I didn't get there until around noon time (had to work 1/2 a day).

I got there around 8:30 and left at Noon.

This was my first time there and I enjoyed it, it's unfortunate that it's only open house twice a year. I'm going to try and go back on Columbus Day.

I was there. SInce I'm new, I didn't really know anyone other than ones I have met in other meet up events.
Thanks for the notification, I would not have known about it without your alert, and I REALLY enjoyed it.

Totally cool. The Greeters were so welcoming and eager to share the history. Also encouraged me to snap away.

What a treasure. Although there were crowds, I enjoyed my visit. Hopefully my pictures will do some justice to this beautiful building.

We plan to be there before 10 am when the main Reading Room opens. Hope to see others there also. It would be great to get any tips or suggestions about good photo spots and shots at the open house.

Is there any close parking? Or how close is the closest Metro station?

    • Sid K.

Has anyone gone to this event before? This link I'm guessing this link is about normal business hours. It says cameras are permitted but not to photograph the main room and large bags aren't permitted. Is something different tomorrow and what can I bring for gear? I have a large camera bag so I don't want to get turned away. I'd also planned on shooting the building not the books. http://www.loc.gov/rr/main/about.html

I've been to several open houses at The LOC and photography is permitted during these times in The Main Reading Room. I've also brought my camera bag and I had no issues. You bags will be inspected upon entry.

Hi all! This will be my first location shoot for this group and I know next to nothing about shooting HDR. I'm reading up on it, but if you have any tips, let me know. Thanks!

Hi Brian - I agree with Dan on his comment re the purchase of Photomaitx and the free tutorials by Trey, those are both excellent tools. My suggestion is don't be hesitant to always tweak the parameters to achieve the best results on either P/MAITX or on CS_6. I personally found that playing with several settings on these softwares helped me learn better to achieve results.
