National Harbor Sunset/Full Moon/Fireworks

We will have a Full Moon rising behind National Harbor on this date. Moonrise and Sunset are within a minute of each other so we can shoot The Sunset followed by The Full Moon. At 9:30 pm there will be a fireworks display in front of The Gaylord so we will be able to shoot that as well.

Sunset: 8:33

Moon Rise: 8:34

I had a great time at the meetup this past Saturday. Unfortunately, I don't think any of my pictures came out well. I was stuck in my head on maintaining ISO 100. Next time I will experiment with higher ISOs.

George. For fireworks you will want an ISO of 100 (as Madge says), but, you'll also want to use a small aperture, like around f/16. The small aperture limits the brightness of the light so that you don't overexpose the shot. As mentioned, you'll want to shoot in bulb mode so that you can control the shutter. A small aperture has too effects - depth of field (as commonly taught), but, also limiting the light that comes into the camera. When shooting in bright condition, using a small aperture to limit the incoming light is a very useful way to control the exposure.

I've found that my aperture can vary depending on what I'm looking at from f/7 - f/16 I just watch as my pictures come up after each shot and adjust. Also I've found 3 sec to be the perfect length for me. So my camera is set for manual using remote release.

    Hi!
This place is not directly connected to the public transport. The yellow line comes till the Braddock Road Metro Station and then there is a bus. Any other option to get here. I dont have a car and coming form NW DC.

    • Tom F.

Hi Prateek, I think if you go to the King Street metro there is a free trolley/bus on King St that will take you all the way to the waterfront. You would need to head south on Union street to get to the park from there. Or a Cab I guess. You could also walk along the river at some point through Fords Landing. at the intersection of Gibbon and Union near shipyard park you can walk along the river. I could drop you off at the metro after the shoot.

Just found out that Alexandria will be doing a fireworks display at the watarfront park at the foot of Oronoco St. tonight, July 12! They won't have the full moon with the Gaylord Hotel in the forground like we will.

Just a reminder to bring your tripod, remote cable release and bug spray might be a good idea. If anybody needs to reach me my cell is[masked]

Which side of the park?? And for an FYI.. the Park Rangers chain up the parking lot at sunset. So if you park inside down by the water, you and your car might be stuck there for the night.

    July 10, 2014

    • Tom F.

Dan, I've been to the park many, many times until closing time which is 10:00pm and they have never locked the gate at Sundet. Where are you getting your information??? At 10:00pm the cops drive through the park with their spotlight blazing and asking people to leave. We will meet just south of the bridge.

Are we shooting from the park location? Are the Gaylord fireworks visible from the Park?
