Let's Get Together and Shoot the Moon!

The "blue" moon that is. Although it peaks Friday night, it will still be at 99.8% on Saturday and rises at ~7:55 PM. Mr. Gadget is working on determining the exact location but for now, plan on meeting near the Washington Monument. I am sure our shooting destination will be within a few blocks from there. Again, Mr. Gadget will update this info no later than Wednesday so check back that evening. And as always, there will probably be food involved either before, during or after! The backup plan, should all of the above fall apart will be another round of fireworks at the National Harbor! Stay tuned! Mr. Gadget has determined that the location will be near the Iwo Jima Memorial. He will add more specifics soon!

Guess I missed you guys. Didn't see the conversation stream. I was over at the memorial.

We were at the Netherlands Carillon. The Moon was a no show so about 8:30 a bunch of us went to jones point park to shoot the fireworks. A couple of minutes into the fireworks we had a torrential down pour with extremely close and loud thunder and lighting. We all got drenched. :). But,I got some fireworks shots that I think I can use.

To maximize my rental lens I will be shooting both tonight and tomorrow from The Netherlands Carillon Which will also ensure I get some keepers. :)

I rented a[masked]mm lens from Penn Camera for a little extra reach. :) I was worried that my[masked] on a full frame sensor would fall a little short. If you are shooting on a cropped sensor 200mm will give you the equivalent of at least 300 mm. I will bring a couple of spare Nikon DX lenses in case anybody needs to borrow one. A[masked]mm and a[masked]

Tom - what's your recommended lens? Minimum of 200mm?

    • Tom F.

Yep, I'll be using a[masked]mm. If you are shooting with a cropped sensor that will be fine.

Parking for this meetup will be near The Iwo Jima Memorial but we will be shooting from The Netherlands Carillon which is a short walk south of The Iwo Jima memorial. Use this address to find the parking area. 1 US Marine Memorial Circle, Arlington, VA Any questions please let me know.

I would like to come, but this time I hope someone can give me directions and be willing to answer their phone. I will be traveling from Bowie, MD. Is that possible?

    August 29, 2012

Starlene here is a link to Google Maps with directions. There is parking on US Memorial Circle Drive. Then it is a short walk to the Netherlands Carillon which is south of the parking area. http://goo.gl/maps/9O...

Would the Iwo Jima Memorial at the Carillon bell tower be a good place?

There is plenty parking located near the Iwo Jima Memorial. It is a VERY popular place to shoot the full moon so get there early and stake out your spot. Bring a telephoto lens and your tripod. My cell is[masked] if you need to find us.
