YOU OFFEND ME

  • Being offended seems to be in the news a lot and as philosophers we know for any such thing there is an object separate from the subject so in terms of being offended there are those that offend and those that are offended.

We will explore what it means to be offended or to offend then to relate this act to reality so we can better understand what it is and better yet how we should think about the offendees, the offendors and the nature of the offending act.

We will consider how this can be an effective tool in the political arena as well as well as in the political arena and anyone who has watched an NBA game will realize sometimes people over react to a slight bump.

Our goal here is to better understand the nature of offense in our culture today, whether it is too much, too little or just right (to quote Aristotle and Goldilocks) will be your individual judgment but based on a better understanding.

I will add some links to some philosophic thought on this interplay between people later.

A combination of factors have arrived; a beautiful day; low interest in this topic and I am struggling to get some work done. I hope I do not offend anyone to call this meetup off for this week?I apologize but one should not fight a triple storm. If you are offended please give me a call so I can apologize to you directly :) Just show next time ok?

Paul would appreciate your contribution on this matter, I would like to think this through more; counter my move?

Here's a decent book on the matter. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/16094246-a-slap-in-the-face

I have read one of Irvine's other books and he makes the same points as in this; that insults should not matter. I like to think of it as sticks and stones or is it possible to insult the Dali Lama with words? The lesson since a child is that hurtful things people say are not worth thinking about yet we have a culture rising up to declare an innocuous word; Redskins evil and somehow able to demean others. They, whoever that might be offended at this name can only be demeaned and offended if they do not have personal resolve to deal with life.

To my mind this is the opposite of good for people to adopt as a mode of viewing life, that there are those that hate you. What advantage is there in thinking that? Yet, that is the clear message of those that illogically call this name offensive. To me they are offending those they claim to protect by such a patronizing notion claiming someone is too weak to deal with what life will surely offer.

We will miss you but do me a favor while you are off at the theatre or in some far away place, please return with a topic idea to post up?

I have less time than I did at one point but I hope to have a framework of philosophical thought concerning this interaction between people such as the Stoics, particularly Epictetus and I have a favorite passage from Marcus Arius I will share.. But I would ask you to merely ponder if just the statement "you offend me" is offensive?
