The DC Philosophy Café is first and foremost a forum of discussion in the pursuit of wisdom.
We distinguish Philosophy along two broad divisions; an academic or analytic perspective and a philosophy of life. We will include aspects of both with but will emphasize the philosophy of life division.
In this we borrow from Seneca in his 16th letter to Lucilius “Philosophy is no trick to catch the public; it is not devised for show. It is a matter, not of words, but of facts. It is not pursued in order that the day may yield some amusement before it is spent, or that our leisure may be relieved of a tedium that irks us. It moulds and constructs the soul; it orders our life, guides our conduct, shows us what we should do and what we should leave undone; it sits at the helm and directs our course as we waver amid uncertainties. Without it, no one can live fearlessly or in peace of mind. Countless things that happen every hour call for advice; and such advice is to be sought in philosophy.”
We will consider searching difficulties, seeking to understand the perspective of each other and to challenge all things before us; if you have the answers to such questions this is not the forum for you. If on the other hand you seek wisdom, the wisdom that comes from close personal interaction, in a casual dialectic moving from one side of a question to another or handing it off like a baton from one runner to the next then you want to join us. Think of it as brain storming on how to live life where no idea is dismissed and all are considered.
If you a novice to philosophy; this is the forum for you as we consider such matters as Happiness, Human Nature and Morality. If you are person of religion or an Atheist, this is the forum for you as we consider a holistic view of the universe, mind body and spirituality; or, if you are a PhD or possess other formal education this is the forum for you as we will consider matters from a logical, epistemological, metaphysical and other scholarly point of view.
We have three requirements in discussions.
You have experience in life
You do not criticize alternative perspectives
(Questioning and challenging is encouraged)
You have a desire to explore wisdom
