Resist Techniques

For this meet-up we will try several different resist techniques. I will demonstrate on a smaller scale 3x5 or 4x6 so that we will not have to bring a large quantity of supplies and will have time to get everything in. (Supply list below). You are welcome to try one or all of the techniques or work on your own project.

Wax Crayon Resist – A pretty basic technique using a candle, wax crayons or paraffin to lay down a design. SUPPLIES: watercolor or acrylic paint and supplies. Multimedia, watercolor, canvas papers will all work well. I will furnish the crayons if you need them.

Oil Pastel & Alcohol ink resist – This is a partial repeat of a previous meet-up. SUPPLIES: Canvas board or a small piece of plywood. Oil pastels, alcohol inks, baby oil, and cloth rags or sponge. I will bring a couple of stencils to use.

Gouache (GWASH) resist – I think this will be the most interesting. SUPPLIES: watercolor paint supplies, black sharpie, white gouache, India ink and a tub of water (I’ll furnish the tub of water). A sponge or soft rag might also be helpful along with the appropriate brushes for each medium.

Please bring any other resist mediums you would like to try. Some examples are Rubber cement, Liquid frisket, Vaseline, Elmer’s glue, Embossing inks or powders, etc.

Demo/Tutorial will start at 7:00pm

You can also use acrylic as a resist on watercolor. Do a watercolor wash on good watercolor paper (like cold pressed Arches). Draw or stamp over it with acrylic medium (or paint). Lift off or wipe off exposed watercolor with damp brush, damp towel, etc. A stain will be left -- gives great two-tone effect. Deepness of stain depends on the pigment used and at what saturation.

Just a thought - -if you have dylusions spray ink and want to bring it we can use it to do some cool resist looks also. So far I have resisted the temptation to buy them but I hear they are wonderful!
