The Dallas REBT/CBT Meetup Group Pages

Is there a cost to join this meetup?

There is no cost to JOIN the meetup. You are invited to join so that you will receive invitations to all upcoming meetups.

What is the cost to attend a meeting?
Effective 7/18/10, the cost per participant is $10-15 per meeting.

Where will we meet when we meet as a large group?
At this time, both tiers are meeting together as a large group. This is because our group is still new & is growing. Over time, members might choose to separate tier 1 from tier 2. Our goal is to meet monthly, with the exception of holidays. We are presently meeting at The Brain Balance Achievement Center of Plano, which allows space for approximately 18-20 people in the waiting room.

What is the probable schedule?
Usually, the entire group will meet on a Saturday at 3 pm, though occasionally this may be changed to a Sunday at 3 pm. Dr. Garcy strives to offer a meeting once each month.

Is tier 1 a therapy group?
No. While you will probably feel supported due to the friendly nature of the experience, Tier 1 is not a therapy group and there is no implication of treatment. Instead, the goal of Tier 1 is to help you to get through a challenge through EDUCATION. You'll be introduced to various aspects of REBT and CBT. Many of the participants in tier 1 decide to work with Dr. Garcy in later individual therapy after they get to know her style. However, this is not a requirement of the group.

What opportunities have tier 2 participants taken advantage of?
Tier 2 participants often use this meetup to meet like-minded colleagues, contribute to the discussion from a professional vantage point, and to gain new content for their own clinical work. In addition, Tier 2 participants gain greater clarity on concepts within REBT and CBT. As Dr. Pam is an instructor of REBT and CBT in the PsyD program at Argosy University, and as she supervises interns from our local Medical Center, some Tier 2 participants have found it useful to participate in her yearly Intensive Weekend Trainings for REBT therapists. Some have chosen to hire her Dr. Pam for professional consultation in their facilities, while others have hired her for their own coaching.

What are some of the topics that we are likely to discuss?
Dr. Garcy has developed an activity guide which has 52 topics of exploration. It is designed to be completed over the course of 52 weeks, so that REBT can gradually be incorporated into one's life. These topics will introduce you to the world of REBT and CBT, helping you to apply various concepts of these theories to your own life. Generally, these topics are each based upon the essential ingredients of a healthy life philosophy. While not required, it will likely be helpful for you to purchase a copy of Dr. Garcy's NEW action guide at: https://www.createspa...

What can I do if I have topics that I'd like to learn more about or an idea I'd like to share?
Simply post the topic on our meetup group's homepage & contact the organizer so your topic can be considered for inclusion. Your ideas are welcome and invited!

What is REBT? What is CBT?
REBT stands for Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy. It was founded by Dr. Albert Ellis in 1955. It forms the basis of many of the current Cognitive Therapies that exist today. REBT helps us to look at how our beliefs influence our feelings and actions. IT helps us to engage in logical inquiry about what we tell ourselves, in order to live in a more healthy and fulfilling manner. CBT stands for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. It is a generalized form of REBT and is commonly associated with the work of Dr. Aaron Beck. This therapy is widely researched and the principles of it have led to relief from many emotional and behavioral problems.
