I have been using Linux since 2007. I used OpenSuse 10.3/11.0 for about one year, and I have been using Ubuntu 8.04/9.04 for about a year. I would consider myself a power-user/non-developer. I probably have intermediate skill level with using Linux.
Like most newbies, I have installed or tried the live CD of several distributions. I find ubuntu & opensuse to be the most user friendly. They are also fairly stable, secure, and the upgrade process is not too painful. Gnewsense may be a possibility.
A Slackware 8.0 live CD back in '02 was my 1st distro. I was feed up with Windows 98 crashing on me, & I wanted a better alternative. Back then, there weren't as many Linux productivity replacements, ISPs weren't Linux friendly, & learning curve.
I hope to have the opportunity to assist others at the meet ups since I'm starting to get good at using and troubleshooting Linux.
To learn more about GNU/Linux, to meet people with similar interests, and to socialize.
Because it's a great way to meet people who know a lot about Linux and socialize.
