Happy Earth Day!

The idea for Earth Day evolved over 7 years beginning in 1962. Senator Gaylord Nelson was troubled that the state of the environment was a non-issue in politics. He flew to D.C. to persuade President Kennedy to embark on a national conservation tour, which he agreed to. For many reasons, the tour did not succeed at putting the issue in the political limelight. In 1969, during anti-Vietnam demonstrations called "teach-ins," the idea occurred to Nelson to organize a huge grassroots protest over what was happening to the environment. The following spring, in 1970, was the first official Earth Day. It worked because of the spontaneous response at the grassroots level. This is tried and true evidence that we can, collectively, make a difference through a national, grassroots movement, just as they did 41 years ago...
