Free ABA Training for parents: 3 hours of foundation Applied Behavior Analysis

Hello everyone- good news, this Saturday's meetup has something more to offer! While parents are in the ABA workshop, AutismUAE will be working with the children and would like to offer some hands-on training for any caregivers/nannies present with the children. Attendance of a caregiver with your child is not mandatory for workshop attendance, but if your caregiver - or other parent!- can attend, they will be able to work with AutismUAE's ABA therapists for some on-site training in the park and indoor gym.

For this meetup, we will be teaching three hours of foundational ABA skills, and strongly encourage you to attend. Understanding the concepts we need to be able to interpret, respond to, and monitor our children's' behavior is a critical component of living with autism successfully. The workshop will cover:

  • The four functions of maladaptive behavior
  • Reinforcement vs Punishment in the context of ABA versus popular culture
  • ABC data for behavior- Antecedent, Behavior and Consequence

Once we've gone over these three main concepts, we're going to put them all together to list out your concerns with your child's behavior, the possible functions, what is currently being reinforced by your responses now, and what could instead be reinforced to help positively shape the behavior later. Please bring a notebook and pen.

You are welcome to bring your child, as the playground within the Ajman Academy is safe and, again AutismUAE staff will again be on hand to supervise children during the course of the workshop. As the workshop has a lot of ground to cover, it would not be a bad idea to bring your own caregiver along, if any, to minimize the need for you to pop in and out of training. Please don't forget to bring a change of clothes for your child as well as a snack. Anything extra you may feel like sharing with the group would be greatly appreciated as well.

Two fifteen minute breaks will be scheduled into the workshop to allow you to check on your children in any case. Please arrive on time, and perhaps allow yourself a little extra travel time to get lost. ;)

The Ajman Academy is easily accessible for the Emirates Road. If you are coming from Dubai or Sharjah, take the Emirates Road towards Ajman, and DO NOT TAKE EXIT 71 going in to Ajman.

Instead, 1 kilometer after exit 71, take the Sheikh Ammar Flyover Bridge, which you take you across the highway and into Ajman. (If you are coming from Ras Al Khaima, turn right just underneath the flyover for the same result)

From there, turn left at the first roundabout and the Ajman Academy Campus will appear almost immediately on your left hand side.

It was wonderful to have so many different stories and experiences shared by parents during our discussions after the workshop- I do hope you were able to find one other parent you'll be staying in touch with even between meetups!

Good news- the venue is confirmed and if you take the SHEIKH AMMAR FLYOVER (and NOT exit 71 into Ajman) reaching the Ajman Academy is very fast and straightforward. Looking forward to seeing you there!
