Steppenwolf by Herman Hesse, (272 Pgs.) Published in 1927, translated to English in 1929 it is a poetical self-portrait of a man who felt himself to be half-human and half-wolf. This Faust-like and magical story portrays Hesse's searching philosophy and extraordinary sense of humanity as he tells of the humanization of a middle-aged misanthrope. Initially rejected as decadent and despairing, it was popularised in 60's America among the counter culture generation. Moon Tiger by Penelope Lively (224 Pgs.) 1987 Booker Prize winner. Claudia Hampton, a 76-year-old English woman and a professional historian, is terminally ill and is spending her last remaining moments in and out of consciousness thinking of writing a history of the world with her life as a blueprint. Gradually she re-creates the rich mosaic of her life and times, unconventional family life, lovers, daughter from whom she is disconnected. The story is presented from different view points and the backdrop world war.
