The C++ User Group - Meetup #1 - Initial meetup!

Hi everyone.

Very fun to see quite a few C++ developers and enthusiasts now here in this group :)
Meetup.com announced the group a little sooner than I anticipated, so sorry it took me a while to finally create an initial Meetup!

Location
This event will be hosted at Optiver (Strawinskylaan 3095, Amsterdam). They will also provide food, snacks & drinks in their canteen! (see picture below)

The programme

19:00 - Arrival/welcome + pizza's and drinks are ready!
19:30 - Introduction Ray
19:35 - Short presentation Berteun (from Optiver)
19:45 - Short round of introductions
20:00 - Guest speaker André Medeiros will give a presentation about a Computer Vision Game he has been working on.
20:45 - Short dicussion and drinks (there will be snacks the entire envening)

This meetup

One example of what I for instance find really interesting (as a suggestion/example) are members of a project talking about what they're working on: their technology stack, experiences with libraries, lessons learned, etc. It's just interesting to hear and see what other people do and talk with them and others about it.

There are members in this group with very interesting backgrounds (games, financial systems, security, embedded, mathematics, ...).. So I'm sure if we have a few RSVP's we could also get speakers or suggestions for speakers easily :)

Please RSVP, also if your attending depends on the programme please let us know.

Maybe it was the first meet-up, but I found weird I didn't see a line of C++ code :) . I'm also member of a Scala and Java meet up, and normally we propose problems or puzzles to solve, with real code during the meeting. I would like to dive more in the code, solve aspects, share ideas, rather then a presentation with slides.

I think for a first meetup it could have been a bit too much. Further, if it is not in the weekend I can spare only 2-3 hours not more (commute).

otherwise I agree, I suggest have a c++11 overview with code!

Missed the first meetup. Looking forward to join the next one.

Did Somebody of optiver found my gray sweatshirt?

    November 29, 2013

    • Berteun D.

Yes. It's at the reception! You can pick it up there.

Thank you, Optiver, for the facilitation. I have not spoken to everyone, maybe on the next meetup.

O nee! Volgens mij heb ik mijn grijze vest laten liggen! But thx for the meetup ;)

Great first meetup! Interesting people, nice location and excelent food/drinks ;) Would like to see more of this happening. Enjoyed the talk as well even though I would have loved to see some of the code behind it. Maybe just a snippet or example on how a problem was solved technically to get it more to the main subject. Overall it was good start for this meetup group :)

Let me provide you with a more detailed route description: Google Maps points to the right building. You can enter the building from the north side (you enter at level 1) or the south side (at level 0).

If you come from Station Zuid by public transport: Exit Station Zuid onto Zuidplein, turn left and proceed alongside Wagamamas restaurant, under the parking barriers and alongside the parking garage (on your left hand side). You enter the building from the south now, at level 0.

Optiver's reception is located in the Atrium building on the second floor. This is the third building (brown in colour). You need to take the elevator.

There's no free parking for cars. I'm looking forward to see everyone this evening!

I've been doing C/C++ on and off for a few years now.

Recently, I've built parsers in C (and Ragel), and a computer vision game in C++. Let me know if you're interested in any of these topics.

    November 5, 2013

    • Tim

What did you build a Ragel parser for? I am playing with Ragel and the docs are a bit sparse :) I would be interested in it. Also any unit testing techniques you may have associated with it.

    • André M.

I think the topic will be computer vision but I'm open for lunch ;-)

Nice Gijs, it also fits well with the topic of the evening. We can add it to the program if you want? I don't know how much time you would need for showcasing it?

Now I think about it more, it looks like I don't have enough time to prepare a showcase, sorry. Maybe next time!

Unfortunately, I won´t be able to join this long awaited first meetup as I have lessons at that time :(

    November 27, 2013

  • Ray B.

We don't have a whole lot of spare time, so if it doesn't do the subject justice to keep it short, we can have it in a following meetup :)

since the talk is about CV people may be interested in sonic gesture, a prototype I build a couple of years ago for extracting hand poses from RGB video.

    https://code.google.com/p/sonic-gesture/

Written in C++ using OpenCV and QT. I'm not sure if it still compiles with the latest QT and OpenCV, I have not looked at it since I graduated :)

also I can dust of an old presentation and give a talk about it if somebody is interested.

Hey Tobias, that's not a problem at all. Hope to see you Thursday :)

I would really like to attend. However, I have a meeting until 19:00. Would it be a problem if I drop by later?

    November 24, 2013

  • Ray B.

Ah, thanks Jason for letting us know, hope we'll see you the next time!

    November 6, 2013

  • Jason F.

Unfortunately I'll have to miss this one due to family commitments on the day. :(

    November 6, 2013

  • Ray B.

Thanks André & Jason, that sounds interesting! really glad to hear about the proposed material of course. :)
I think we should add both to the schedule? I'll private message you in a sec.

I have been working on a set of custom browsers written in C/C++ and Objective-C, the project was quite a revelation and the lessons learned were many. If this is of interest let me know.
