Indian Raw Food demo and/or dinner with Briksha Mahendra

Update 9/26
The dinner slots are filled but there's still room for the demo!

I’m excited to announce that our new sponsor Briksha Mahendra will be giving us a raw Indian demo and dinner. I love Indian food and it’s the thing I’ve missed the most since going raw. So it’s exciting to learn how to create wonderful raw Indian classics and I know of no other chef that knows the secret to creating them. Briksha says its surprising how good some of these dishes come out raw- some are even better than their cooked food version. People can choose whether they want to come for the demo, the dinner, or both. Those who come for the demo will get to sample the treats he will demo, plus he will have handouts and give us tips we will need to incorporate more greens in our diet- making delicious crackers and breads, and how to make bases for different Indian dishes. In other words, he’ll be giving us more than just the recipes. If you want to come for the dinner alone, that is also an option. Arrive at 7:45 p.m. The dinner will be limited to 10. Whatever you choose we will be getting a sample of delicious raw Indian food. The meetup will start at 6:30 and the demo will last approximately 1 hour. Those who want to come to the dinner only should arrive around 7:45 p.m. Those who want to come to both just stick around and sample more great treats.

The demo will be

  • Raita soup or salad (he’ll probably make one and bring recipes for both)
  • Tomato curry
  • Indian Cracker and Lentil/mung bean- loaf with plum or mango chutney OR Indian green bread and pakado ( veggie ball) with plum or mango chutney.

The dinner will consist of the items from the demo plus other items Briksha will bring including salad, a curry dressing, a spicy Indian vegetable, and his famous cashew hemp ice cream.

It is $20 for the demo alone, $20 for dinner alone, and $35 for both [sorry no more room for dinner]

You will need to pay to RSVP but if you’d rather not go through Pay Pal then notify me that you prefer to send me a check and I’ll reserve you a spot. Another great thing is that Briksha is generously donating 10% of the proceeds to our meetup. This helps us with website, plates and utensils, and occasional incidental venue costs.

Here are further instructions about finding the space. 2141 Broadway has an entrance with blue mosaic tiles around it. Go directly up the stairs and turn left into the room. (There is an elevator available from a different entrance on 22nd St. if anybody needs assistance). The location is just a block from BART....exit BART at 19th Street Station. That puts you right near the Paramount Theater and walk a block and a half up from there.
ONE MORE THING- It is advisable for all meetup events to go back to the site at least the day of the event to check to see if any changes have been made. This happens from time to time. I e-mail everyone but in case you miss something, I suggest you take a last look. (very rarely will any changes be made that last day)
Hope to see you all there!

Briksha was wonderful, and his food was great. The only thing to put a damper on the evening was 2 ladies in the front row who were unable to refrain from constant conversation, so they would miss what Briksha was saying, and kept asking questions. Whatever happened to giving a speaker your undivided attention, and asking questions afterward? Very rude. Another attendee shushed them, but they ignored it, so I needed to ask them "please!" to stop. I hope that does not happen again. It has happened before. We are adults. Let's act like it. And show respect to our speakers.

Deliciously Divine! Briksha has a book inside of him. Loved dining with the group. Thank you Darcy, and all the others for organizing this lovely event.

What a great evening. Very tasty food (I'm going to the farmers' market today to get some plums to make the plum chutney) and wonderful energy. Many thanks to everybody!

The food was incredible. I can't wait to start making the dishes. And what a wonderful group of people. I loved the whole experience.

I'm really glad that Briksha allowed Jeff to video the demo so that many people can see how easy and delicious these dishes are. The one thing they couldn't do is sample them- they were divine. Tonight was a chance to share in some real community- it was a delight
