A Taste of Simply RAW: Dinner and a Movie

This location is shown only to members

To Celebrate our Community

It’s been awhile since we’ve had Michael Bedar show this inspiring film and so I thought it would be fun to celebrate our growing community with dinner and a movie.

The Movie: Simply Raw is about 6 diabetics who spent 30 days at the Tree of Live and transformed their lives on a raw food diet. The majority of them reversed their diabetes, got off their medication, lost weight, and one in particular learned to start dealing with her emotions rather than trying to drown them with food. Michael Bedar worked under the supervision of Gabriel Cousens, MD, for several years. He collaborated in the making of this film and will bring his knowledge to introduce the film and take questions and answers at the end.

See the trailer of the film here

As a special treat Cook & Butler are back to prepare us a special dinner!

The Dinner: The main course will be their scrumptious tostado, which people rave about:

A crispy corn tostado – (super crunchy and made out of corn, flax, and just a little oil) with no refried beans topped with salsa, guacamole and shredded lettuce with a cashew or coconut creme drizzle

A new salad – jicama and pineapple bathed in a spicy coconut lime dressing-the straightness of the jicama and sweetness of the pineapple contrast nicely with a little jalepeno heat in the dressing. Shivie says it compliments the tostado.

Chocolate Orange Torte for dessert

(no soy, no lecithin and made with agave and raw cacao and the nut crust will most probably be almonds)

* parts of the menu may be subject to change due to availability....and chefs discretion

Dinner costs $15 and although there is no price to attend the event- You will need to purchase dinner when you RSVP.  If you’d like to attend and do not want to purchase dinner- just e-mail me and I’ll RSVP for you.

I want to add that this is a great deal that Cook & Butler is giving for our group alone so I hope we show them some love and turn out for this tasty event. As a recent review states "No one in the city makes better raw food"

Dinner 6:30 p.m.

Announcements and introduction to movie 7 p.m.

Movie 7:15 p.m.- 8:45 p.m.

Q & A - 8:45 p.m.- 9:15 p.m.

We will be meeting at the Persian Center- which provides a great TV screen and an intimate setting.

Get your seat- get your dinner- meetup and watch a great movie!

About Cook & Butler

The Cook & Butler is a dynamic partnership between Shivie Cook and Cemaaj Butler–yes, that really is their last names on their birth certificates!  Having been together for nearly 9 years they have been running the business part time for several years and have been full time in the kitchen for almost a year.

Inspired by the health benefits of a balanced diet, Shivie and Cemaaj strive to bring food to the table and recipes to the classroom (via workshops) that will not only entice the senses but also be health promoting to the overall health of our bodies.

Shivie is originally from England and arrived in San Francisco in January 1999 as a corporate lawyer. This was an assignment that was initially intended to last a month and turned into a full time relocation. Although Shivie was "successful" in the eyes of society, earning 6 figures, she did not feel successful in her life. She was 200 lb.s at her heaviest, sick, and was hospitalized a couple of times a year.  Tired of being sick and tired, she walked out of her six figure corporate office to find a life with more meaning and purpose.

Nine years later, Shivie has found the passion she left her life as a lawyer for–all things food and health!  Her partner, Cemaaj, shares in her passion for not only the culinary aspects of healthy vegan food preparation but also for sharing and passing on the skills they themselves have learned along the way. "Bringing You and Your Food Back to the Kitchen" is their slogan–they want everyone to eat real food, prepared by real people, in real kitchens...and they are here to help you achieve their goal for yourself.

Learn more about their To Go Meal Program where you collect your meals at the beginning of the week.  They also teach workshops.

Based in San Francisco, The Cook & Butler have served 3 farmers markets as vendors and recently their pies and desserts became available at Rainbow Co-Op.  Shivie and Cemaaj are determined to change the health of the world one bite at a time

We have a new salad for you all to go with on your tostada plate, jicama and pineapple bathed in a spicy coconut lime dressing-the straightness of the jicama and sweetness of the pineapple contrast nicely with a little jalepeno heat in the dressing...we hope to see many of you there...

We served this menu for a fundraiser in the park at the weekend and it was a huge hit, the tostadas are super light and crunchy (only 4 ingredients) and the sides are each unique yet all compliment one another.

I wanted to know if my guest can bring her daughter. My friend has paid for dinner, so she is fine sharing her food with the daughter. Just wanted to know if there is enough space. If there is enough food, she would be happy to pay for a dinner at the event.

I have seen Simply Raw many times now and it never fails to inspire me. It is a truly great testimony to the healing benefits of raw food. We had a wonderful meetup with many new people and delicious food prepared by Cook And Butler, who added a tasty carrot salad to what they told us they would bring. Their chocolate orange torte was out of this world and as one member said- she could eat that jicama salad every day and never tire of it. I agreed and we have plans on having them back for a class. They are on their way to Petaluma for a new phase of raw food experience and will invite us all up for a meetup- Maybe we'll get the Green Bus to take us. Thanks to everyone for all the support in making this event great- and the Persian Center for hosting us.

Had a lovely time. Very inspirational movie. Good food. Seats should be arranged for better view next time.

The energy in the room, in the air, in the food--all inspiring and delicious. This was my second meet up and I came because I recently had two well intentioned long time friends recently "descend" shall we say, on me with concerns about "fad" diets, getting enough nutrients and the always questioned protein intake. I've been in a 4 month personal transition to raw vegan after quite a bit of research on my own. As of last night, transition time is over.

Excellent movie; good food; well organized; a bit too much "thru traffic" once the movie started (to and from the front entry)
