Musselburgh Races

A chance to catch the motion, horses, or whatever catches your eye.

We will meet at the Levenhall end of the race course, where we will catch the action for free.

The first race is at 1pm then every 30 minutes  (the last @4.30pm). We will meet at the bus stop at 12.30pm and find our spots. (I am going to find good spots this friday so will update at the weekend.

Buses:

Sorry the 15 bus does not run on Sundays, not sure how I got that wrong as I looked up the bus site!

26 - stops at Levenhall, just passed the end of the racecourse

44 - turns right just before Levenhall so involves a short walk.

30/40 Both come to Musselburgh and you can change or walk along to the course.

Car:

If driving best to take A1 to first exit for Tranent, (2nd exit after city bypass), turn left then follow signs for Musselburgh. At second roundabout (has large golf ball in the middle), turn right to Prestonpans, then turn left when you see a sign for Levenhall Links Leisure Park and follow this road round to the race track, plenty of parking.

the facebook page of Musselburgh Racecourse asked if anyone wanted to send their photos. I got in touch and gave them the offer to choose any they liked. If anyone else wants to do so, send a message via their page and Lyndsey will arrange.

do tell...... thanks for organising, Ken and for taking the trouble to provide the useful information about shooting. Labels for such a big group were a good idea too.

Hello, kinda new to this group. As much as I want to come to this event I don't have a zoom lens which I believe is necessary for this stuff. Am I right in thinking this way?

    January 31, 2014

    • Ken A.

Hi Srihari. As Mike says we can stand right next to the fence. Your 18-55 will do you fine.

      January 31, 2014

    • Srihari

Thanks Ken, Alan and Mike. Is anybody coming from Perth? I live in Perth. No car. I am tentative for now.

Hi, I think you're confusing a zoom lens with a telephoto lens (to bring the subject closer). You don't need a zoom lens for any type of photography, apart from certain special effects, and the race track runs pretty close to the road at Musselburgh.

    January 31, 2014

    • Srihari

Right. I thought both are the same zoom and telephoto :D what's the difference?

      January 31, 2014

  • Mike

You do have a zoom lens then (the 18-55mm). You will probably get some reasonable shots at the 55mm end. Later on it would probably be worth investing in a telephoto zoom, but you would be talking about £250 to £450, depending on the focal lengths available.

Sorry....late change of mind. Going away for the weekend. I've been twice to the racing and its great fun. Being out on the course can be really exciting but getting into the compound is really interesting. So lots of opportunities.

I would really like to have it ready for next weekend!
    Thank you!!

    January 25, 2014

    • Ken A.

Elena if you dont manage to get it fixed i have a spare d60 you can borrow for the event. Just need to bring your lenses. Just let me know how you get on. Ken
