Hello. My 19 yr old stepson was diagnosed w/ high-functioning autism at a young age, but due to his desire to be socially connected w/ his peers, it seems to fall more along Aspergers syndrome.
I've known my stepson for 9 years, but only during school breaks until 2008 when he decided to come live with us in OKC from Florida. He's a great kid but there's a loneliness in raising a teen w/ AS. I am looking forward to meeting other parents.
I am his stepmom, and because of his social awkwardness, I'm one of his best buds (not before dad & grandpa however!) I love hanging out with him but I know he desires to have friends his own age and it breaks my heart not knowing how to help.
He was diagnosed at a relatively early age but the school system in Florida simply put him in the special education classes and that was that.
The question would have to be more "before meeting him" since I didn't know him when he was diagnosed, but, my only knowledge of asd was seeing a documentary about Matt Savage, the jazz pianist. When I met my stepson I immediately recognized it.
I can't really say for sure. He came here from FL for his senior yr and we enrolled him in Harding Charter Prep. It was amazing what the school did for him, I only wish he had come to OK sooner. His growth amazed us as well as the school admins!

Hey Girl! Thanks for helping out! Do you need any details on volunteering tomorrow? Are you familiar with the Farmers Market?
Hi Kristan! I am wanting to help with the posters hanging for the ballet. Where exactly do I need to pick up the posters today?
Welcome Kistian,
This is a great way to meet people who are caregivers and also people with asd. The past meeting was so interesting because we had parents, adults in the spectrum, teenager (asp) and and a little one. We are planning to meeting thursday the 15th at 7:00 at Johnnies in 33rd in Edmond.
How do I get the posters & the list from you? I have a few emails asking me that too. We want posters! :)
Well you know, I always hang out where the cool kids are :)
The pizza was so good that I should have gotten another slice of pizza before I left, but yes I did have a good time there at Sauced. And I did get some pretty good information.
Do you mind being one of the organizers of the Transition Town Meetup incase I can't come?
Thanks for jumping in Kistian. Hope to see ya at one of the volunteer events soon!
