"Splendor of 118Ave" Photo Display Contest

The Carrot Cafe (located at[masked] Ave) is an amazing non-profit community cafe that helps promote Art on the Ave and the revitalization of 118Ave. I am super excited to announce that The Carrot Cafe has generously offered to feature our photographs in their display window for the month of October, 2013! The theme of the display is "Splendor of 118 Ave".

Please read the Contest Rules Carefully:
1) All photos must be in Black & White, cropped to an 8x10 dimension.
2) Max 2 entries per PAID member
3) photos are taken within the months of June - Aug 2013
4) Photos must be taken along 118 Ave, between 97st-82st.
5) Please ensure that your original file has a resolution of 300dpi so that it can be enlarged to an 8x10 print.

6) Post your photo to this album: http://www.meetup.com/The-Edmonton-Shutter-Bugs/photos/15531462/

Contest Details:

Contest closes Aug. 31, then all members will vote for their favorite photos to narrow the entries down to the top 25. Then, a panel of judges from the Carrot Cafe will choose from this list of 25, their favorite 8 photos. These 8 photos will be hung in their display window for the month of October, whereby patrons of the Carrot Cafe will vote for their favorite photo. The photo with the most patron votes by the end of October will be declared the WINNER and win a gift certificate courtesy of the ShutterBugs!

We will host at least 1 meetup on 118Ave, but we encourage our members to visit the Ave on their own or with friends or other shutterbugs to get as many perspectives of the Avenue as possible!  The Carrot wants us to showcase everything that is unique and wonderful about 118Ave: the people, the culture, the archetecture, the many public events that are held there.

Please note: This contest is in support of 118Ave, so make sure to portray it in a positive light. The Organziers reserve the right to remove any photos we feel are not appropriate for this theme.

No kidding! I was not expecting this. A special thank you to the organizers, particularly Laurice and Sharon for all of their efforts, and to the Carrot Cafe for their involvement too. It was a fun project.

We are pleased to let everyone know that our involvement with the Carrot in support of the 118Ave Revitalization project was very much appreciated by the Carrot Cafe and received a lot of positive feedback from their patrons. Thank you to everyone who participated: you all did a super job, and helped support a wonderful community project.

After counting all the votes, we are pleased to announce the WINNER: Lois for her photo of the Carrot Cafe exterior. Congratulations Lois, we have a $20 gift cert to the Carrot for you.

Also, a very special thank you to Laurice and Sharon for all their hard work in getting the photos printed, matted, displayed, removed, counted votes, and pretty much everything else. It seems like a simple project, but wow, there was a lot of work involved...!

We were not sure how many photos we would receive as the judging panel of 118 ave did not want to go through a 100 photos. We will submit all the images for the Carrot judging panel to review and pick. Once we hear from them we will be in contact with the individuals to supply high res photos cropped to 8X10 for display.
The display will be set up for the month of Oct.

What is the next step in this contest as the date has been reached and there are 21 photos? Does the carrot simply select 8 from the 21 without the need for a vote by the members?

Anyone wish to get together sometime this long weekend and take some pictures down 118 ave?

Hello, new here but have a question. When you say "cropped to an 8x10 dimension", do you mean the ratio at any size? For example in pixels: 2400 x 3000 or 3200 x 4000 or 4000 x 5000 etc...I have a full frame camera and want to use as much image taken as possible.
    Thanks

Great idea. I just went to Google Earth to get some ideas for the area and there was not one photo in that entire stretch! I shot some good street stuff there in April but cannot post it for the competition:-( Let's fill in the Google Gap!

I tried googling it as well and like you said, there aren't many photos at all. So we thought: hey! We're a great photography group that loves to help the community so let's get out there and take as many photos as we can to help showcase this wonderfully unique community!

Laurice and I have been there twice now to meet with the Carrot Organizers and it really is such a fun little cafe. It is completely volunteer run, and features great unique local artwork, along with handcrafted jewellery and other items. They have open mike nights and various workshops. Make sure to check them out!
