Celebration of Dance at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village

Thank you to Shawna for suggesting and hosting this meetup!

"The Celebration of Dance offers one of Alberta's largest Ukrainian dance extravaganzas featuring a variety of dance groups of all ages from across Alberta. Throughout the day costumed role players will welcome the new spring season with authentic sights and celebrations in the historical village. Other family friendly activities include a village market, musical entertainment, horse-drawn wagon rides, sheep shearing, church services, exhibitors and traditional Ukrainian food."

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, located 25 minutes or 50 km (30 miles) east of Edmonton along Highway 16, just 3 km (1.8 miles) east of Elk Island National Park. For a map of the location, see: http://www.history.alberta.ca/ukrainianvillage/location/location.aspx

Hi all,

For those who would like to meet the group, we will gather at the Centennial Pioneer Monument on the west side of the parking lot at noon. Of course, you are free to explore the Village on your own if you prefer. This is the first weekend the site is open for the season, so in addition to the dance festival the entire Village will be open.

If you've never been, the UCHV is an open-air museum that reflects the history of Ukrainian immigrants who settled the area between 1892 and 1930. There is much to see with over 30 restored structures (including sod house, schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, orthodox churches,  and grain elevator), staffed with costumed interpreters re-enacting historical activities of daily life. On the practical side, there are food services, a gift shop, and picnic area.

Looking forward to meeting you there!

    Thanks Shawna for suggesting this. Brought along the whole family, even the in-laws. Have wanted to visit for a while and this got me out there. Neat sights, amazing dancers and a good chance to chat with some of the group.

    I'm hoping to head out there early and maybe try and get in on the pancake breakfast at 9am. I should be at the meeting site at 11:45 though. If anyone else is coming earlier look for me. I'll be the guy with the Canucks hat, glasses, a brown jacket and grey camera bag shooting a Nikon.

    Hi Everyone,
    Just a few final details - PLEASE note the change in gathering location.

    1) I will wait/watch for Shutterbugs at the Centennial Pioneer Monument at 11:45, and will head into the Village at noon. If you'd like to meet up with other Shutterbugs, please join us between 11:45-12:00. To locate the monument, please see the #17 map at: http://www.history.alberta.ca/ukrainianvillage/planyourvisit/images/UCHVmap.jpg

    2) Each person will be responsible to pay his/her own admission to the Village. Regular adult daily rate is $9.00. If you mention to the cashier that you are with the Edmonton Shutterbugs, you should receive a 10% discount on the individual admission fee (does not apply to family rate). 3) Please remember the guidelines posted previously to ensure everyone enjoys their visit to the Village. There is another photography group visiting the site on Monday, so you may bump into some of them as well.

    The weather forecast for Monday is looking great! :)

    I have asked my Taty to come (Dad) he likes any chance to wear his Ukrainian shirt, and he is a character. not shy to have portraits taken.. his mobility is not good, so I will be hoping to say "hi" to many of my Edm Shutterbug friends as I can find. But I will be sticking close to my Dad.

    The group bookings coordinator recently sent me the newly-developed guidelines for photography groups. Please note the following:

    "Thank you for deciding to spend time as a photography group at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village. Please see below for some general guidelines that we ask you to adhere to during your visit.

    Please be considerate of taking photographs of the general public. Your group is welcome to roam the village and take photos, but we ask that you do not impact any guest's visit or enjoyment of the site.

    General:
    - Pets are not allowed unless the owner requires their assistance
    - Smoking is not permitted in the historic village
    - No alcohol is permitted at any time
    - Vehicles are not permitted in the historic village
    - Photographers must remain in public areas only
    - UCHV employees may ask photographers to move their equipment or leave a building if it is busy

    1 · May 8, 2014

    • Shawna

      Guidelines continued: Historic Village:
      - No food or drink is allowed in historic buildings; water bottles are permitted
      - Churches: While photographs can be taken inside the churches, liturgical services must not be interrupted and visitors cannot enter the sanctuary
      - Groups are not permitted to move historic artifacts
      - Some historic buildings or some areas of historic buildings may be closed to the public on specific days
      - To help protect livestock and vegetation, please do not enter pastures, fields, or gardens

      Special Event Days:
      - Tripods should not interfere with audience view of any concert or activity taking place
      - Photographers are asked to stay away from stage entrace/exit areas
      - Emergency exits must not be blocked by "tripods/photography equipment."

    I checked with the Village for any special photography or visitor guidelines, and they advised of the following: - the use of tripods and flash IS allowed on the grounds and in the historic buildings;
    - be prepared for muddy paths and roads if there is rain (hopefully we won't still be dealing with snow by then!);
    - no food or drink is allowed in historic buildings, but water bottles are permitted;
    - pets are not allowed unless the owner requires their assistance;
    - smoking is not permitted in the historic village;
    - no alcohol is permitted at any time.

    Admission rates for the 2014 season are currently under review; the individual admission MAY be raised by $1 at the most.

    If we have 15 or more Shutterbugs attending on the day of the event, we will qualify for a 10% group discount rate on individual admissions only (not family rates). I know attendance numbers tend to fluctuate as people join/cancel right up to the day, but hopefully we'll have at least 15 Shutterbugs come out!
