Interviewing an Entrepreneur: Ice cream peddler & web developer Scott Kilmartin

EC will be interviewing Entrepreneur Scott Kilmartin on his journey which spans titles such as bouncer, PT, advertiser, developer, international fashion designer, successful online retailer and recently Ice cream peddler. He is also one of the blokes on "Beers, blokes & business", the no #1 ranking business & marketing podcast. On the night Scott will be sharing lessons he has learned which any aspiring entrepreneur  or business owner can learn from.

Who is Scott?

Scott hitchhiked around the USA as a teenager instead of going to university - breaking his poor mother's heart.

In a colourful career Scott's been a bouncer, moved furniture, built concert stages and was a personal trainer before the term existed. He ran a hospitality group in the California in the 90's and flogged software in Dublin before landing back on these shores to start haul, an eco design business upcycling used advertising billboards into laptop bags and iPad cases.

He took haul from manufacturing in a garage and selling on a card table at Salamanca Market in Hobart to being stocked by some of the world's leading design stores and leveraged early social media adoption to launched the brand into the US, UK & Japan. In 2008 haul was named the City of Melbourne Business of the Year.

Selling online since 2000, haul had a significant domestic and international eCommerce business.

Scott used social to weave and amplify his brand's story with a quirky tone for customer service and even exploited his dog Gus the Boxer as a brand ambassador with a cheeky voice in the twitterverse.

After exiting haul in early 2013, Scott started two new businesses; co-founding a web developer building ecommerce sites recently speaking at PESA eCommerce Conference and pedals ice cream on carts at He's also one of the blokes on Beers Blokes & Business the No.1 ranking business and marketing podcast in Australia.

Thanks Monica! I will put a schedule up for these events now as the event always starts at 630 and the speaker is on at 730. Allows people coming from work to get there and time for networking. Thanks for the feedback

What struck me about Scott's interview was the courage and resilience he showed when - when business and life was half way down the toilet, he took a night job delivering doughnuts to keep his business and dream alive to see the crisis through.

Its this kind of dedication and guts that separates true entrepreneurs from those who either wont face their obligations by going bankrupt or end up failing.

I will certainly be inspired by that when things get tough in my own business.

I came out of last nights meet up with a bit more clarity.
Just want to say "thank you" for volunteering your time to come speak to us so openly about the ups and downs of being a persistent, passionate, patient and curious entrepreneur.
It's not all rainbows and gelato. It's a lot of damn hard work but its worth it :)

Scott has kindly appeared at several eCommerce events I have put on. He is very generous with his insights and advice to other SME operators. :)
