Beach Bonfire

Vegan S'mores anyone?  Join us for a fun-filled day at Seabright/Castle Beach in Santa Cruz complete with vegan potluck and nighttime bonfire! Michelle will arrive early in the AM in order to score a fire pit (they're limited). You can arrive anytime thereafter, but I'd say the main party will run from 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

For those who may wonder what exactly to bring to a vegan potluck I'd say it's wide open with the following exceptions :-) Please nothing with animal derived products including eggs, dairy, honey, cheese, fish, and if you're unsure you can ask me and/or read labels because they even sneak dairy into things like some dark chocolates. :-(  We will need folks to bring a few coolers to keep the food refrigerated.  If you can RSVP with an idea of what you will be bringing, there will be less chance of doubling up.  Bring whatever you'd like to drink. I'll bring some plates and silverware but if you can bring your own cup that will save a tree. For that matter if you can bring your own reusable plate and silverware you'll save even more resources.

We'll be at Seabright/Castle beach, across the street from the Museum of Natural History and just west of Seabright Avenue.  See a map athttp://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=&geocode=&q=santa+cruz+museum+of+natural+history&sll=36.964449,-122.007616&sspn=0.006498,0.01929&ie=UTF8&cd=1&hq=santa+cr...

Alcohol is prohibited so if you want to partake you need to bring cups or keep it incognito somehow.  It will be great if someone can bring an umbrella or some type of shade structure and we also need someone to volunteer to bring a folding table.  Feel free to bring frisbees, kites, guitars or any other beach activities you enjoy. Bring whatever you need for your own comfort;  chairs, towels, sunscreen, and warm jackets because it can get cold at night.  Also, we will need wood to burn.

Please let me know if you have any suggestions or questions!

We had a great time. Thanks Michelle, for coming early and reserving a fireplace! There were some wonderful new people as well as the loyal regulars. We played frisbee and smashball, and enjoyed the beach. It was even better after sunset when lights lit up the wharf. All too soon the beach patrol told us to go home.

Thanks to Michelle for getting there early to reserve a spot. Thanks to Radha, Rick, and Julie and Shawn for bringing important necessities. Thanks to everyone who showed up. Unfortunately our sign wasn't large enough (a few folks couldn't find us - sincere apologies). We're already working on correcting that problem for next time.

As far as vegan soy burgers go, I prefer Gardein Beefless Burgers. they're non-genetically modified (non GMO) and they are good for grilling from frozen, it says on the package. They also have an excellent Chik'n Scallopini which would also probably be excellent on the grill, though they don't state it. Their Beefless Tips are chunks that are about right size for a shish kebab. The best price I've found for Gardein is at Whole Foods. They're in the Meat Alternatives section of frozen foods.

I too wonder if someone can bring a portable but sturdy barbecue. I would love to do a vegan barbecue. If you do bring one, it must be clean, I just read about how many people ingest wires from grill brushes in their barbecued food and need surgery to remove it. We vegans want a very clean grill anyway! Bamboo skewers are best soaked for at least 2 hours before using.

elizabeth, my dog will be on leash. how far does your child have to be before allergies kick in? he is short haired and he too has allergies (!) and will be washed beforehand to get rid of loose hair. if i cannot bring him, will have to stay for a very short period of time. you are not even sure you can come, so let's "coordinate". will email you from your profile.

any good links to vegan picnic food that have been tried and true? i have had my classic fruit salad and rice dish, but would like to try something that is more heavy or crunchy, such as with tempeh. all i know is stir fry. plus, don't want it to spoil:) also wonder if there will be something to grill soyburgers on. plus, wonder if there are vegan soyburgers, as ones i've had were "vegetarian". eager to keep learning!!! slow but sure....

    - The Sign at the entrance to Seabright Beach says that dogs are allowed on leashes. Wow, a dog that likes salad, that's my kind of dog! I can't wait to meet him.
    - This has been a popular and fun annual event. Folks come at different times and leave at different times, and many stay for the whole time. It's a chance for people to come from near and far for a day in the sun and to enjoy a beach bonfire.
